Watch Direct TV on your PSP wirelessly? Wowsers!

I was bumping around Comp USA the other day, and they had this big display for a new product called....


Location Free


It's by Sony. Basically, it's kinda like slingbox, but instead of just using it on a laptop like slingbox, you can actually use it on your PSP. The cool thing about it, is that you can hook up say a Direct TV receiver to it, or a Comcast cable box or whatever, and you can actually watch your satellite channels or cable TV channels on your PSP! No wires.


Your PSP simply needs to be in range of a broadband connection. So you can actually take your PSP out in the backyard, and while your kids are playing, you can watch NFL Sunday Ticket. Or MTV, or whatever. That's pretty pimp if you ask me.


Also, if you go on vacation and you are at the hotel, and you really want to see that NFL game that can only be seen on Direct TV NFL Ticket, well, you can actually watch it on your PSP if you have LocationFree setup at your house and it's hooked up to one of your Direct TV receivers. Of course you can do the same thing with a laptop, but I like the fact that it works with a PSP, because it's much easier to tote around a PSP than a laptop.

Dang... I was going to buy a Slingbox too. Now, I may just spring for a PSP finally, and get Location Free instead. This is worth looking into, thanks!

Don't get your hopes up guys, it costs $350 for a LocationFree Player.

FYI: The PSP has been able to do this for months. That is, if you want to lose the functionality of your PSP being able to play NES, SNES, Genesis, Atari games and more...and spend $350...go for it.

Edit: Well, it does have a rebate for $50. But it's still a retarded $300. Rofl.

Yeah it isn't as great as it sounds. You need Version 2.5 or higher and this $300 box. I heard the quality isn't great either.

There is a homebrew program for the PSP that lets you go up to a higher firmware temporarily, and then bounce back down. At least I've heard something about that. So if that works like that, then it's possible that those of us with emulators on our PSP can use Location Free as well.


The price of the system is super expensive, no question about that, but being able to watch NFL Sunday Ticket on a PSP while on the crapper to see if your Fantasy Team made it to your Fantasy League superbowl is pretty damn priceless.

You can also use the thing with a laptop and Sony's $1000 Location Free tablet thing, so it does have some functionality besides using it for the PSP, but yes, it's expensive as hell. Chances are, nobody buys the thing, and you will be able to find one for half off at closeout next year.

I heard the version changer doesn't work. This is the one that lets you change your version to like 10.00 and keep emulation capabilites right? Cause that is the only version changer I have heard about.
