Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Long Version
I was brousing around the internet for Sonic 2 stuff and came across a hack of sonic 2. I downloaded it and played it and wow Hidden Palace,Wood Zone,Genonyde City and Dust Hill Finished in this guys vision of the levels and best yet even one with knuckles in it. So what it is is the Original Sonic 2 with Beta Levels as well. Enjoy:

How novel, I can now recreate my favorite screenshot from those old 'coming soon!' advertisements in Sega Visions.
A genuinely cool thing, but playing through the discarded zones and then through the ones that got released not only emphasizes the lack of polish but also how Sonic 2 stood head and shoulders above other platform games of the time. Interesting ideas that just didn't work out got cut.
I remember playing this hack about a year ago. I really liked it, and have seen that it's improved. There was no ice part in Dust Hill before, and Genocide city only was Chemical plant with an Oil Ocean background (meaning it had the CPZ tileset). Now it seems that it's still the Chemical Plant level design, but with a really nice and unique tile set. The guy still has to start Death Egg zone, though. My favorite part of the new stuff then was Wood Zone act 2. It was a really fun and fast stage with a ton of springs. I hope he kept it.
Anyways, I probably should download this new version.

I finally tried it out, I was a bit disappointed with the level design of the "city" zone, looked like something out of "Batman Return of Joker" then Sonic 2
The Woods, looked like something out of Donkey Kong Country almost, creepy as it may be...
Dust Hill Zone was sweet, pretty similar to S&K Desert area. yet with the Ice, very early "Ice Cap Zone"
Hidden palace Zone was gorgeous! Sad that this was removed
The Death Egg Act 1 and 2, I can't believe they decided to re-use the Chemical Plant Zone.

WOW great find is it hacked or unreleased code? I noticed that the Knuckles version is a much larger size does that make a difference? Better, right? More stages?
Also do you have to collect all the chaos emeralds to see all the stages?

The beta of Sonic 2 I played didn't have half the zones in it that this one has o.O Genocide City was especially funny, because there was no level and you just died as soon as you started it. :P
Did someone just run with the ideas of the screenies in magazines at the time, or is it based on ideas that came up later and were scratched? Also, does the level select work like it did in the beta, or do you have to go into the sound test to activate it like you did in the finished product?

You have to use the regualr level select code of sound tests 19,65,09,17 which if you dont know its Yuji Nakas birthday. On the Knuckles one Press [Up]x3, [Down]x3, [Left], [Right], [Left], [Right] at the title screen. A sound will confirm correct code entry. Press [A] + [Start] to display the level selection screen.

The hacker recreated the levels with a combination of his own handiwork, tiles/enemies/music already in the final version, and ideas batted around the Sonic 2 community. This isn't a lost official version of Sonic 2 with the beta levels fleshed out. The "new" levels feel more Sonic 3-ish, in that they're slower, longer, less linear, and have more puzzles.
I don't know if Project 2612 has a rip yet, but when I was using GYM archives there was a rip of Sonic 2 with lots of unreleased music tracks. Some good stuff in there!
