Default SNES - Game Boy compatability?

I don't know much beyond 8-bit, so please forgive the newbie-like questions. What category of Game Boy games can be played on the Super Nintendo via the Super Game Boy? Obviously, there were numerous advances over the years, from the original "green screen" games up to the current DS. Would I be correct in assuming DS games can not be played on the Super Game Boy? What about Game Boy Color games? Game Boy Advance games? Is it a crapshoot depending on the individual cartridge?

I have the SNES and Super Game Boy with one game: Tetris. I'd like to pick up a few goodies, but don't want to waste money on something I can't play.

On a related note, any recommendations for good Game Boy games? I lean toward RPGs, sims, and strategy, and away from sports & fighting. Are the Mega Man & Castlevania games simply ports of the NES games?

    Thanks,

    jeff d

Only original GameBoy cartridges, and Game Boy Color games that are backwards compatible (Think they're the ones in the black cases, like Zelda DX at least). And among those carts, several have special features that only function when played in the SGB (Like Donky Kong is a SuperGameBoy game due to special SGB only things like the arcade border).

All clear Game Boy Color titles, Game Boy Advance titles, and Nintendo DS titles (I would've thought that one would've been obvious...) aren't compatible.

Well, only original Gameboy games can be played it, although I'm not sure about some of the color. I'm thinking of the ones where you could play in color version or black and white, anybody remember that?

Leo_Ames pretty much sums it up.

As for recommendations, and of the Final Fntasy games are good for RPGS. You'll also probbaly want to check out the Zelda titles and Gargoyle's Quest (action/RPGs).

The Mega Mans and CVs are not ports, though the first MM (maybe second too?) are very similar in a lot of ways.

You can tell by the shape of the cart wether or not it will work.
The SGB will play anything that the original GB can, and nothing more.
I'm not really into RPGs, but I'd recommend Legend of the River King. It's a fishing game, but with RPG elements.

Not really, Game Boy Color carts look like they could fit into the same cartridge slot. Not a good indicator at all. Gray and black Game Boy/Game Boy Color cartridges is the only good indicator.

R-Type DX should play on the SGB in its Original Game Boy compatibility mode.
