Default XBAND modem, Sega Genesis questions

I may be able to get an XBAND modem for the Genesis. I was wondering if it still had any uses or is just a curiosity. For example Ive heard that the Saturn Netlink can still be used for online games. Also, what is the purpose of the weird "memory card" slot on the XBAND.

My friend just noticed that the Genesis controller plugs directly into a computer port. Is there any way to directly interface with the controller with some sort of software, or are we stuck using some sort of USB adapter?

At the moment, the only reason to own a XBAND is for collecting purposes. The service for it stopped a long time ago. However, there are some people trying to get it working again. If you search for "Xband Revival Project" you can find the details.
