    Default SNES Discoloration

So, you know how on almost all SNES 1st editions the bottom half is horribly yellowed and discolored? Well, I just picked up one that is absolutely pristine....any idea how to keep it that way?

I've been told that keeping them out of sunlight retards the yellowing process. Granted, with certain plastics, it's almost inevitable anyways. My sister has an early SNES whose top half suffers the same affliction, while I found one for five bucks at a flea market with a pristine shell and suspect it to be a later model. Anyone have any idea at what point/model # Nintendo stopped using the plastic that degrades?

mh this is only a problem in the us, isn't it?

my pal snes color is as new i think it has a lot to do with the sunlight AND smoking, no one ever smoked near mine, so that might be a reason

btw i got two us-snes a few days ago, one was mint, the other had the TOP HALF yellow, not the bottom?!?!?

Depending on when the SNES was made is how you can determine if it will yellow.. BUT by now all that will yellow have done so. Nintendo was supplied some really poor quality plastic and instead of destroying the shells they used them all. Now they did start using plastic that didn't change color but all the shells are mixed so some will have a brown top and the bottom will be fine.. etc.

None of the later snes's had the problem.. pretty much all the SNES's that sold for 99.99-49.99 will not have problems.

The problem can't be stopped, it's a chimical reaction with oxygen.. hard to stop THAT.

I had a yellowed one, until I found a non functioning one with a pristine grey shell. Voila! like new SNES! It's a shame so many of them are yellowed, or worse, half yellowed.

Raedon is dead on right. The yellowed ones are yellowed on the inside too, which rules out sun and smoke.

Of all the yellowed console I've seen, nearly all of them the top part including cart flap are almost never yellowed. Eh, a 4.5mm gamebit and a $2 can of paint solves the problem. Or maybe I should try that invisibility clothes the Japanese invented and apply them to the SNES console so everyone could see the insides.

Just in case your interested, PAL SNES's suffer the same problem. The whole of my SNES is completely yellowed, except for the controller port panel, and the panel with "SUPER NINTENDO ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM" printed on it.

However, they got the problem sorted very quickly and only some of the very first PAL SNES's had this problem.

Indeed, I have a later ed. SNES bought new in early 1997. Its shell is still gray to this day. However, I had to replace it (dammit, I fried it... always beware of polarity when using universal adaptors!) and found an older used SNES that has the yellowed casing.

I guess that, by the end of the SNES' life, Nintendo became aware of the yellowing problem, and fixed it.

I've had my snes for 10 years, and it only has slight yellowing... and for the majority of its life it was in direct sunlight. It is likely strongly related to environment. I suspect that the strongest yellowed consoles have been in houses that people smoke it, but I am not entirely certain.

I bought mine as the Killer Instinct Set....and it hasn't changed colors (thankfully). I think the SNES is a beautiful design (as far as consoles go), but I've seen those yellow looking SNES units plenty of times before. I thought maybe they were cleaned with stuff they shouldn't have, or they were left in windows for years on end...

    Thanks for the answer!

If you're talking about the PAL SNES/JAP Famicom design...then yes I fully agree with you.

The US SNES is an ugly behemoth!!! Damned chunky and hideous. The second US SNES was a vast improvement.

I'm actually talking about the US version! I like the Super Famicon also, but I really like the US version

I still think the Intellivision and the Master System are the ugliest dogs ever. The BEST looking would probably be the 3D0.
