Default Commodore 64 emulator/PC trouble (help please!!)

I wish I knew as much about computers as I do the games I play on them, but sadly, that just isn't the case. So, I need your help, please...I'd be forever grateful if you can shed some light on this one.

I downloaded one of the only two C64 emulators that I've found on the net (the other emulator's site was in German or something so I was scared away). However when I try to open it, I get a message saying that a ".DLL" file is missing -- specifically 'D3D9.DLL' is not being found. I have NO CLUE what that's supposed to mean, nor do I have any idea of where to aquire this .DLL file. Heck, I don't even know what a .DLL file does!

So if anyone has any information as to what I'm supposed to do about this, I'd be unbelievably grateful. I was just so excited when I realized I could play all of my old favorite C64 games again, and once I hit this road block, I felt so disappointed.

Thanks so much for at least reading this.

Which emulator in particular are you trying to use? I've heard good things about Hoxs64, but I'm not really a big C64 person (I was a Tandy1000 whore)

D3D9.DLL is a file that should be included in the DirectX distribution, so try reinstalling it. Failing that, try googling the filename for a place to download it (a ton of valid links will pop up).

edit - apparently VICE is quite good, too.

it's the CCS64 which I downloaded from here. Where can I get that Hoxs64? Maybe that was at the site written entirely in German? :/

I will try to re-install that DirectX program. Thank you for your help!

oh! haha! oops! I ended up downloading a different emulator (can't remember the name right now), in addition to re-installing that DirectX package (which, as it turns out, was indeed the problem...heh.). Thanks a million again for your advice! I am a happy little gamer now.

And if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go spend the entire night with my new toy.

The newest version of CCS needs DirectX v9.0c or later I believe, so that might be the problem.

Either way, CCS or Vice are the two to go with. Neither are 100% compatible, but between them, they play 100% of C64 emulated games.
