Default Which original PS2 model should I go after?

Almost six years after its release, I'm finally ready to take the plunge and get a PS2. However, I much prefer the original, bulkier model, so I guess I have no choice but to get a used one. So, which serial number(s) should I check out for/avoid? (Is there a particular model that has a much better reputation (less noisy, less DRE prone, etc.) than the others?)

P.S. Oh yes, I don't intend to have it modded.

From someone who has repaired more thana thousand PS2's, the SCPH 39001 is the best model period.

The newer models are supposed to be less noisy. These are the ones with the IR port and lack of iLink port on the front.

Personally, i'd recommend one of the LE models if you are going for one of the old style PS2's.

The latest one of the bigger versions (v10?) as it has been the most reliable in my house!

    SCPH-30001- junk
    SCPH-30001R- junk
    SCPH-35001- junk
    SCPH-39001- best laser, mechanicals, everything
SCPH-50001- Ok, until the laser or eject mechs fail. then it's bitch to fix. Expensive to fix.
SCPH-70011- Ok,until laser fails (unit is garbage) or overheats, or door sensor fails, or is dropped (easily done it's so light).

This is not guesswork on my part. This is what I see every day, and what the owners pay for.

Junk does not mean it's born broken. It just means it easily falls victim to more failures than the other versions in a significant way. So please no hate mails from proud owners of great working units I just called 'junk'. Enjoy your PS2's and leave me alone.

This thread actually has me interested to know what makes those first few models junk, not out of criticism but out of curiosity. I've got a 30001 that's been going strong with no problems for several years, but if something in the future is going to go wrong with it (it's inevitable really) I'd like to hear the grueling specifics beforehand

i know the 50000 series added progressive scan. was this just for dvd playback, or did the earlier models also do progressive scan for games?

I think they all do progressive scan for games (some games anyway), but only the later ones do progressive scan movies.

My assessment is based solely on reliability, not feature list.

Ive have my ps2 since day 1 of release and it still works perfect to this day, I have not had a single problem. Honestly, i think it just comes to how well you take care of it/how lucky you are to get a perfect ps2.

The SCPH-1X000 series are the worst of all of them and are japanese only. Later SCPH-3000x units are similar to SCPH-3500x, SCPH-370xx is similar to SCPH-390xx, SCPH-550xx is similar to SCPH-500xx.

I've got a 35001 (I just checked). The fan is noisy as hell, but it's always worked 100% (*knocks on wood*). It's been working perfectly since I got it, and it's got a network adapter and 80 GB HDD

When I say it's noisy as hell, it's not an unnateral noise, just the fan. It's noisier than my laptop, but quieter than my PC and xbox, so all things considered she's doing fine
