    Default Inaccessable gaming easter eggs

While looking through the files on the Star Wars Episode 1 racer disk for Dreamcast (using the serial cable) I noticed two files named SW_DISCO.AFS and SW_PARODY.AFS

Heres the cool bit, the first one is a Disco remix of the starwars theme tune (very cool) and the other is a parody of Copacabana by Barry Manilow called "Star Wars Cantina". These songs are not accessible via the game as far as I know and are normally inaccessible to PCs too, so in effect they were hidden very well. And to top it all off, they were not standard files, but encrypted AFS files (sega's special sounds format).

I also found a picture of Bill Gates on the game "Toy Commander", hidden very deep down and disquised as a .txt file. Very strange.

Anyone else have any amazing tales like this?

P.S. I can post those MP3s if there is enough interest

Hmm, very interesting. I'm guessing they are unused bits which were originally planned to be included within the game. Would be interested in hearing some star wars music though

Astrosmash for the intellivision has the Asteroids game hidden in the programming, but is normally inaccessible.

And then there's the Arwing enemy in Zelda: OoT.

While we're here, sonic riders has got the "Hang on" and "Super Hang on" theme tunes, but they are not used in game. Also japanese voice files are included but not selectable ingame. It's either laziness, a secret, accident or just a developers joke.

Actually, many GBA games (as an example) use the same codebase for all regions, but have things dummied out depending on the where it's sold in.

I think the US version of Zone of the Enders for GBA has German and French text, but you can't select them; but you can on the Euro version, though. It's not uncommon for programmers to do that, it's easier to just comment out some stuff.

This ticks me off because I could get an English/Spanish/French title made by Nintendo (as an example) but they dummy out anything but English on their games. Pah. I'm sure the French Canadians don't like that one bit. :P

Well a slightly different version of the Star Wars Disco is actually in Lego Star Wars (its a semi hidden room off the beaten path in the Kamino level, that when you do the simple puzzle you get to see a disco and the robots dancing to the music in the room). It only plays about a minute or so and its 'synth'd' where there are the brass accompanyments in this version.

I'm not sure if the Star Wars Cantina is anywhere else. I keep thinking the Special Edition Single releases that came out when the Special Editions were released to VHS a few years back might have had one or even both of them on them, but I don't have mine with me to tell you for certainty.
Because it makes no attempt to be great, it is therefore extremely great.

Cheers, that disco mix is fun. The parody is a track by Richard Cheese called Star Wars Cantina

There's all the "Stop N Swop" stuff packed into Banjo-Kazooie, but you can access it all with a Gameshark so I'm not sure if that counts.

Wasn't the japanese release of Legend of Zelda: Super Neato Minish Cap the same way? IIRC it had the entire english script disabled in it and people were trying to find a way to hack the rom to enable it before the US version came out.

The "Star Wars Disco Mix" is actually Meco's version of the Star Wars theme, which came out in 1977 (I believe) and was actually a radio hit for a while.

My guess is, they were both songs that the developers listened to that they couldn't get the rights to to include as extras.

I remember messing with the region setting on a Genesis emulator and it changed the Streets Of Rage title screen to the original "Bare Knuckle" title screen when set on Jap.

It's nothing special now, but when I first got into emulation years ago I was amazed.

Isn't that Star Wars Disco the same intro that can be seen at the beginning of the two GameCube Rogue Squadron sequels? I love that mix! Lightsabers and blasters making all the SFX noises. Lol!
