Default Who here has a GP2X?

    Hey All,

I wanted to know who here has a GP2X. I just got mine three days ago, so I am still a general nOOb at it. But I have been learning fast.

If anyone has any good links or good games or good tips, please add them here. I will do the same.

I will be putting it through its paces for a review (will be posted at Blogcritcs, and here of course) so if anyone has anything good or bad to say about it, please share.

So here are the issues so far:

    >> Not a lot of MAME roms work "out of the box" so to speak. I have read on the gp32 forums that they need to be downgraded. That info is on my computer at home, so I will post it later. When you download the emu, it comes with a list of 1115 games that work with it. I must just be really good at picking ones that don't work without some fiddling.

    >> When I plug the GP2X into my PC, it seems that the SD is recognized, but will not show up in My Computer. I can put the SD card into the Media Reader of my laptop of course, but that defeats the purpose of the included USB2 cable. No problems at all on my G5, the card mounts just like any other USB device.

More later, I am busy atm. Just want to hear from others. Thanks.

Ha Meancode said the same thing last night. Actually i think he said it eats batteries like a whole family of Game Gears.

The GP2X eats two 2500mAh batteries in 4-5 hours. A Game Gear will eat 6 batteries in the same time. And a whole family of Game Gears are using more energy than a small village

Nice. I am using rechargable batteries, and do not think I get 4-5 hrs. out of them. I have yet to put it to a test, however.

As long as you invest in some rechargable batteries, or an AC adapter, I think you are fine.

gp32x.com has been great. I have also been using the German forum a lot as there are a lot of developers on that forum, and have been taking to them.

Here is the MAME page on the wiki:

Here's a video of me playing Metal Slug 2. I made this a few months ago, like 2 hours after I got my unit. I'm sure the emulation is better now. Also, I've removed the protective film off the screen. Finally, I now have a bigger memory card.

    I love my GP2X.

    Holy Toledo Batman!

My local Radio Shack has 1 GB SanDisk SD cards on sale for $59.

I thought $75 was a good price at the gp32z.com store!

Needless to say, I will not be holding out for a 2 GB card. I currently have a 128 MB card and that is really limiting, especially with so many games being ported to the GP2X (even some PSP homebrew people have been at work on GP2X code).

I don't know if the sale is going on nationwide, but there is a chance it is.

I just downloaded Dodgin' Diamonds II, a vertical scroller. Dodgin' Diamonds is sweet, check it out!

Have you checked out the GP2X's Noiz port already? It's worth a looking at.

And then maybe everyone reading this should check out rRootage, for Windows. I cannot praise this game enough.

I've had mine for a month or two now, I love it, simply because of the Genesis emulator, which is flawless.

Does anyone use the SquidgeSNES emulator? I can't figure out how to get save states to work, do I need to create a sub folder for just save states?

I really wish someone would make a Game Boy Color emu with saving features.
Mostly just play Nintendo 64. If you've got games PM me! Cart only.

I was wrong about the 1 GB stick. It cost me $57.99. It also has an $8.00 rebate. Sure, it will take two months, but in the end, it cost me $50!

They wanted $40 for the 3 volt, 1 amp PSU. I will try elsewhere. That is just crazy.

Thanks DonMarco, I will try that shooter. I saw it but it didn't look like much from the single screenshot the archive site has.

Now that I have the 1 GB card however, I have room for all that great stuff.

I posted this at gp32x.com forums, but thought maybe, by some off chance someone such as DonMarco could shed some light on this subject.

    Hi All,

I just picked up a S-Video coupler today and now have my GP2X hooked up to my TV.

If that is important, it is: Samsung 32" HD LCD.

The audio plays out of both my TV speakers and the speakers of the GP2X. Is this normal?

Most things seem to work fine. However, some of the emulators I run only show half the screen, show a double image either horizontal or vertical.

DrMDx - Top half of screen is game, bottom half is mirror of game, but very "noisy" looking. The app itself runs fine. It only does the double image thing when it launches a game.
fishyNES - I only see the left half of the screen
GP2XHandy - Same problems as DrMDx, but even the selector screen is doubled.
smsPlus - mirror image left to right, at launcher and game.

Are these problems of the emulators themselves, or is my video not working properly?

Other things work fine, playing video works, MAME works, squidgeSNES works, other emu seem to work just fine.

I made sure I have the latest versions of these emu, and I am running FW 1.4.0. I have unplugged and plugged in the S-Video cable. It still does it. I also put in fresh batteries. Still have these issues.

    What gives? Thanks,

    Ken

Off hand, I would say that the emus weren't written to be thrown through tht TV-out channel. The video and music, sure, but with the emulators and maybe homebrew, porting it and getting them as fast as possible is the first thing to take care of.

I'm sure this will improve with time, plus this might just be something with the firmware. I don't have the cable, myself.

There is a TVout fix that was written for the 2006 coding competition. I am told to give that a try. I will let you know how it works.

The cool thing is, I didn't think they would send the TV-Out cable, but I am glad they did. Playing SNES games on the TV is just fine. The other games such as Vectar, Tilematch, Beat2x play fine on the TV too.

There is just this small problem I have right now. It is called Oblivion, as in the one from Bethesda.

I am glad I did not wait to get the Mark 2, but the inclusion of a usable joystick has got to be the best feature. It also has firmware 2.0 installed by default, for those who don't like going through firmware installs.

From what craigx said, the screen is better and worse, depending on your point of view on the subject. From what others have described, I am happy with the screen mine has, though seeing them side by side would be nice to make a judgement for myself.

Ive got a second version GP2x with the new lcd screen.

I cant describe how cool it looks. I used to play emulators on my PSP but the graphics always blurred and had ghosting (try playing sonic 1 on the genesis emulator on PSP).

I played the games again on the GP2x and they look amazing. The screen is crisp, no ghosting or blurring going on.

I`d definitely recommend to get a second version GP2x!
