    Default Rip Off Arcade Games.

By this, I mean actual rip-offs, not mere clones (such as Centiped to Slither).

Donkey King was common, and there were many others, especially the Pac-Man rip-offs ("Puck-Man 3," "New-Puck 2").

And one rip-off arcade game, the one for Naughty Boy, was actually in the arcades before the legit one!

This was back in the 1980s. But, come to think of it, I didn't see that many in the 1990s and onward, except for a Street Fighter 2 rip-off that let you shoot diagonal fireballs. And I only saw that once.

So, to you more recent gamers, how often did YOU see rip-offs? How often do you see them now?

I just played one a couple weeks ago that was a total rip off of street fighter 2 The World Warrior. Fighter's History.

BTW, should this be in the arcade forum?

Yeah, I've played a couple of those 'Street Fighter 2: BlackBelt Edition' Hacks. You could pull off all moves in the air, Ryu/Ken did 2 fireballs at once etc. One of the machines was glitchy as hell though.

being in the arcade collecting melarkey, pirate pcbs pop up all the time, and are often more common than the original games. some have hacks like you say suck as the street fighter speed ups, and some are cleverly bootleged copying the original exactly down to componant level, often things like sound/graphics are lowered in quality or ripped out (yawdim mortal kombat anyone?) in order to use cheaper componants and clone chips suck as most of the oki stuff

anyhows, it's hard for a player to tell just by playing if the game is a bootleg. the only way to tell is look at the pcb and check for markings etched into the pcb when it was made.

What about some of the bootleg MVS carts? I'm sure maaaany people have played a boot on a cab and don't even know it.

And then there's the MVS hack jobs. Most recent would be Metal Slug 6 Chang Egun, a hack of MS3 I believe. There's quite a few King of Fighters hacks too, most of which are a bit dodgy to say the least. Although Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2003 (KoF'01 hack) is supposed to be pretty good.

Is it actually any different from KOF 2K1?
I've seen it a few times, but never tried it out.

I just started my mvs collection. I can't tell which is bootleg or the real deal. I do know the "100% working" and "100% original" when looking on ebay or other sites, the working one is the bootleg and the original is the real one. I still can't tell the difference.

It's usually best to check over on Neo-Geo.com to confirm if a cart is a boot. But basically your cart PCBs should be green with the SNK logo, and all the ROM chips should have the NGH# on them (check with the Master List). And be either Sharp or Toshiba.

If you have funky coloured PCBs, PCBs with no SNK logo, or random mask ROMs, it's 99% a boot. Having Eeproms isn't always a definate indication. I have a couple of legit carts with Eeproms. Also, some legit carts have funky daughterboards in there such as my Metal Slug 3. But if it looks a bit odd or has evidence of hand soldering, go ask over at NG.com.

Afaik, CTHD'03 has a few more characters and extra backgrounds. I know it has some backgrounds from one of the StreetFighter Alphas.

And yes, Yanton lists his legit carts as '100% Original' and boots on his website as '100% Working'. He's a good guy, and if you do get a boot he sorts it out nicely.

Fighter's History is not a rip-off, just one of the many tournament fighter clones to follow in Street Fighter II's glory. This one was from Data East, and is probably one of the better clones out there from the early 90's time period.

I was looking through a pile of marquees the other day, and came across a couple of Donkey Kings. I've never actually played it though.
