Default Final Fantasy Origins - screenshots

I ended up with a copy of Final Fantasy Origins and what can I say.. Looks ok. Not as good as FFIII as some magazines like to say about it.. In fact the FFI remake looks worse then FFII-SNES but the music is top notch.

I find myself wondering why Square opted for FFI and FFII and not FFII and FFIII. After all this leaves only one FF game unreleased in the US officially.

The FMV intros are nice but no where near something like Chrono Cross. Not that I care for FMV but it is worth mentioning.

After 4 hours of FFI, origins style I can see that they have changed nothing in the story or script, just the battle screen layout is changed to a more Final Fantasy type battle.. layout.. yea.

It's also pretty obvious that Square spent more time on FFII. The graphics have a better quality to them.

Don't fret, Maxlords. It looks like FF Origins will be no more than thirty bucks.

And I'm planning to snatch it up. Final Fantasy II has aged surprisingly well, and it's great to see an official English release after all these years. The original Final Fantasy's not a bad bonus, either.

I suspect that Square held off on a PSX revision of FFIII just so they could sell it separately later on, those fiendish corporate bastards. And I'll gladly play right into their hands.

I just put most of my Final Fantasy games up on E-Bay tonight, hopefully if some of them sell (SNES FF III, Super Famicom IV & V, Wonderswan color FF II console, Playstation games, Chronicles, etc.) I can justify picking up Origins. I'm even selling most of the really cool stuff next week, yet I am sure I will buy Origins. It is like a drug.

I'm also glad to see an English release, but it's my understanding that it's the lame duck of the series. The powering up system sounds retarded. Want to raise your HP? Get hit a lot. Best way? Have your own party beat you to within an inch of your life, then heal. Repeat. Raise your magic? Cast a spell repeatedly. Luckily (?) you can exploit a bug that lets you select the action and cancel, but still have it be counted as being done.

    Questionable stuff. :/

I'll buy it for my collections that's for sure and play both of them- maybe this time I'll like FFII. I had played every FF title through emulators, SNES titles, or PSX games at one point and 2 was the only one I didn't like- the battle system wasn't the greatest to me.

According to all the reviews , they tweaked the system so that is not necessary anymore. We'll see.

Electronic Gaming Monthly. March 2003 . Page 101 and I quote
"Final fantasy II goodbye, Experience points. Rather than traditional experince points, final fantasy II rewards your characters with attributes based on their actions, so they get more HP if they get hurt alot, more strength if they attack copiously, more MP if they cast tons of spells, and so on. In the original version, it helped to sit around attacking your own party members in order to gain hit point upgrades. On Ps1, the game is balanced enough so that you won't have to resort to such silliness"

And it was in a couple of other game mags too.

I'm more impressed by the Garland boss fight. I can't wait to get this game.

SPOILERS!!!!!! DO NOT READ IF YOU WANT TO BE SURPRISED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've played through both games on the Origins disc, and all they are are English ports of the Wonderswan games. The only reason FF3 wasn't on the disc is because there wasn't a port on the Wonderswan. This disc is essentially just another cheap rehash port of a port of the original NES games, with a cool CG opening for FF1. I'm glad they released it, and added a couple of extra things, but it is the EXACT same as the Wonderswan versions. Obviously, this is just a quick release to make some cash.

The one thing I liked about it was the Beastiary, Item List, and the Gallery. It kept a list and running percentage of every item and creature you ran across in the game, and listed every item you obtained in each dungeon. That way, you could see in a moment's glance if there were any more hidden chests in any given cave. The Beastiary showed pics and stats of every creature you ran across, so you could look up a certain creature's weakness if you have defeated them previously. I'm assuming the higher percentage rate you have, the more pictures that are unlocked in the Gallery, with some exceptions that are unlocked after pivotal key plot points.

There's no ending CG movies for the end of part 1, just a rehash of stills from the opening.

    And that's about it.

Although you probably can't tell by my ranting, but I really enjoyed the games, if not just for the nostalgia factor. I'm still going to buy the disc when it is released, just because I'm a collector, but if you're looking for a completely new version of two classics, and have played the Wonderswan versions, you're going to experience some unpleasant thoughts.

    My two cents.
