    Default The Tipping Culture

This is extremely "alien" to us Brits and I just wanted to get it straight. What exactly is the tipping culture in America? Do you like tip everbody from bartenders to waiters/waitresses and is their any general rules?

My general rule is not to tip at all, if you did it in the UK the bartender would think your making moves at him then probabaly spark you out!! Of course if it's a beutifull women then the wallet tends to get more withdraws

Dont tip at all and the waitresses will come after you with a knife, 15% is what most people tip. Give a dollar for a drink at the bar.

... and to make it easy for the mathematically impaired, if you're at a restaurant, just double the sales tax for the entire check. That'll usually get you pretty close to 15%.

If you're going to do any gambling, be sure to have plenty of dollar coins for the cleavage... er, cocktail waitresses who'll be making sure you stay totally smashed

That's pretty crap to be honest...$1 per frigging drink. If the person that serves drinks is male, i'm NOT tipping. If the person serving is female and ugly, i'm NOT tipping. If the person serving is female and pretty, well I might do what "retrogmr" suggests.

Kinda reminds me of the scene in "Reservoir Dogs" where Mr Pink is arguing about not agreeing with the whole tipping culture!! Can you get away with it if you look like a student?

If the service is good you tip.

Has nothing to do with the persons looks in my opinion.

A hot chick takes forever and has an attitude fuck her but if a 95 year old man with 1 arm is Johnny on the spot with my orders and is friendly he gets a good tip.

And no not a dollar a drink you can tip the bartender once or twice for the night of drinks is fine.

Waitresses alot of time here in the States only make like 2 dollars an hour so if you dont tip for good service your an asshole.

Exactly, Sothy. Devin, most people that work in that kind of service here in the States depend on those tips for supplemental income. Like Sothy said, waitresses especially (I'm not sure how we would have survived without the tips my mom brought home.. $2 an hour waitressing certainly wouldn't have cut it). Around here, I usually tip about 20% if the service is good, less or not at all for bad service, no matter who I'm tipping. It's part of the culture, I guess you could say. When in Rome

Hey Hey calm down their

I've never been over the Atlantic to the States before so forgive my lack of local knowledge!! I had no idea they were paid such bad wages, that's extremely poor so I will take heed and do a little tipping...everybody happy

For those sort of jobs in Europe the wage is much better and tips are just the icing on the cake!! In terms of dollars my mate who was a waiter in a middle ground restaurant earned $11 basic.

Plus if you want good drinks, you gotta tip... if you don't you'll be drinking all soda in your beverage. Usually I will start out with smaller tips (like if a drink costs $2.50, I will tip 50 cents) and depending on the service, I'll give more or less. If you don't want to figure out a tip for every drink, some bars will let you run a tab if you have a credit card and you add on a tip at the end of the night.

Devin, don't worry, Vegas is all about drinking on the cheap--it's the gambling you have to worry about

I would only tip a dollar every single drink if you are getting FREE drinks--which you should be if you are gambling. See my thread on this board called "Video Blackjack and Poker at the Bar" for my low-budget approach to drinking in Vegas.

Otherwise if you are paying for drinks themselves (you really shouldn't have to in a casino), I would tip well on the first drink, and then go to the same bartender the next time. He/she will likely give you another good drink for your money that time--after that then tip every other drink or so.

The basic thing I'm trying to get across is that the tips should be the only money you spend on drinks in Vegas.
