Do you mean real-time blood sprites or cutscene blood?

Most likely not the first, but the first game I ever played with blood in it was Technocop for the Genesis back in '89 or '90. I remember reading a article in an issue of VG & CE, about newer games having too much violence, and Technocop was featured prominently in the article. It looked so cool at the time, but when I finaly got a chance to rent it, the game was totaly lame. I think Splatterhouse came out around this time too.

Texas Chaninsaw Massacare and Halloween for the 2600 didn't have any blood, did it?

Also, the old CRL games on Spectrum (Dracula?) from 1985/6 featured blood and got an 18 (or 16?) rating in UK.

I played Halloween on 2600 and don't recall any blood. Maybe it was there and I just couldn't make out what it was.

Chiller by Exidy came out in 1986 according to KLOV. Is this bloody enough for you?

Back in 1982, Atari assembly line employee Willie McGee had his arm lopped off by the label cutting machine, and some of the blood leaked into copies of E.T., making it the first game ever to have blood in it.

I rember well the first game that actually "shocked" me. It was Tecmo Knight. I was in vacation in Sydney Australia and initially thought it was strictly an Australian thing and that they would never allow this kind of game in the U.S. . Anyway, the initial cutscenes are what did it. It showed some chick getting her head stabbed (sort of) and some dude getting his head torn off (sort off). Then the gameplay had you jumping on monsters heads and clawing at it until you tore it off! Freaky stuff for the late 80's videogame scene :P

    Default The Bilestoad

I remember the Bilestoad on Apple 2 had lots and lots of blood. I will get back to playing that when I have the space to set up an Apple 2. It was an overhead perspective medieval warfare game. It must have been out before 1983.
