Default sega cd system question from a sega cd newb

I collect Nintendo NES mainly and am well on my way to a complete US set. The problem is I get sidetracked, and currently I just can't resist the temptation to buy Sega Genesis. I don't know much about the system though, so I was doing a little research. My question is, I found this Sega CD at a garage sale but can't find out much about it. I couldn't find any listed by themselves on ebay, but I'm not sure I'm looking right. Here is the only one I found

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...DME:L:RTQ:US:1

See it's different then all the other Sega CDs I found because the it is for the first generation system as opposed to the second gen where it sits side by side. So what exactly is this called? Sega CD Generation 1? Are they rarer than the second generation? How much do they usually sell for with a Genesis on ebay? Thanks in advance, any and all info is appreciated.

    Default Here you go

You found the first model Sega CD often called the "front loading model" It is prone to breaks and was replaced by a Sega CD model in which attatches to the side of the Sega. It is more uncomon and goes for a little bit more. The problem with Sega is that it is bottom of the barrel in price right now. Only the rarest of rare stuff goes for anything. I would price a front loading model in top shape at $40 to $60.

great, thanks for the info! and you got that bottom of the barrel thing right, the systems sell for next to nothing while snes' go for $40-50. Makes it hard to collect the way I do, but I'll figure something out.

How can low prices make it hard to collect?

It makes it so people figure they'll just sell them locally or donate them to goodwill, since it isn't worth ebaying them.

well that's not what I meant, but that's true. what I meant is, the money i get for collecting is generated by selling systems. i sell nes systems and use the money to get nes games. it's easy. it won't work with genesis though, because they go for about $10, which won't get you very far.

99% of the broken Sega CDs are caused by that stupid fuse... A5 if i remember correctly. Do a google, they have instructions on how to fix it somewhere on the web.

Geez... amazed what people will pay for this stuff.

Keep an eye on the Buying and Selling forum right here at Digital Press for much better deals. Last year I sold a Model 1 Genesis (with full US/JPN modification to play Japanese Mega Drive cartridges), Model 1 Sega CD, and a complete 32X with the retainer clips, I believe three controllers, all the power adapters, the RF, everything for $40.

Now, something went awry with the CD tray, a retainer gear or something (not sure if the buyer got it working) popped out of position in shipping. But it was all good when sent out.

Well I could be wrong since I'm new to the genny scene, but I'm pretty sure that auction went that high because it had complete copies of Beyond Oasis, Shining Force II, and Crusader of Centy. From what I understand the box for Centy is one of the hardest ones to find, so it seems like that buyer got a pretty good deal.

Also, keep an eye on garage sales. A few years back, I got a genesis + 1st generation SCD combo with a ton of games (Willy Beamish and the original version of Night Trap included) for $63.
