If you don't have experience or skill with soldering and wiring I wouldn't bother trying to build an A/V cable when a replacement can easily be had off of Ebay. Click here for a list of current auctions for "Genesis AV cable".
Bear in mind that the cable type depends on what model of Genesis you have. Make sure you get the right one. The large unit with the headphone jack is a model I. It takes a different type of cable than the models II or III, which are the physically smaller Genesis machines and both take the same cable.
Assuming you have a model I or II you can also just go for a straight RF signal using the RCA jack on the back of each unit. Go to your local Radio Shack and get the following parts, which shouldn't cost more than $10 total:
Radio Shack catalog #42-2367 - 6 foot RCA cable.
Catalog# 278-276 - RCA to Coaxial adapter plug
Hook it all together, put your TV on Channel 2, 3 or 4 and enjoy your Sega Genesis.
Also if you have a model 1 Genny you could use an NES rf. If you may have one that is.
