It can be from V3.0 to V3.3,both of my 3.0 and 3.3 gamesharks work well with Super Smash Brothers,but i do reccomend using the 3.3 gameshark because it most of the time works better.

Does that "enable game code" thing also apply since it's a nintendo game?

No keycodes are required for this game. The game should have been already programmed into the gameshark as a selectable game for cheats if not you can easly find codes off the internet.
