Default is wondermega, X'eye or CDX have region free CD codes

Hi I am new here and joined to ask this important question before I buy one OR 2 of these machines tomorrow

I have US SEGA CD and JPN CD games and I want to play them both.

    So I do I buy a JPN wondermega and US X'EYE ?

If you are going after those 2 machines specifically, then yes. If its just to play different region cd's, you can either try to copy the real cd, hack, re-burn, etc. or try a converter cart. However, converter carts will not work at all on a Wondermega or X'Eye. JVC had a different BIOS installed on the Wondermega, thus why a converter doesn't work. I know...I tried them both on my Wondermega to no avail. So, it's pretty much as you stated...Wondermega for the Japanese Mega CD's and the X'Eye for the US Sega CD's.

    LaserActive info

And no, they're not multiregion. You can do a dual boot BIOS if you have an Eeprom burner. But no Mega CD is multiregion as standard. Ever. Other than Dev kits.

Really? Maybe I'm thinking it will play CD-R's, then.

This actually leads right back to your original question....the JVC Wondermega 2 is the same as the X'Eye JVC released the Wondermega 2 in the US as the X'Eye, but removed the wireless controller and S-Video features. For me, theres no question which to get, and thats the original model. It had more features (like the motorized lid, audio enhancements, etc.), some nice lights and it just had a much better overall design.

All Sega CD machines will play CDRs, as far as I know. Joe Public burning his own CDs was a distant dream when the Mega CD was around, so they didn't bother to protect against it.

Thus, with the help of decent CD ripping software, like Nero or something, and a program like scd_conv, you can make an ISO image of your game, change over the region code, burn it onto a CD and away you go!

did the OP of this thread buy that Wondermega that was listed on ebay recently. I had that thing on watch. Very nice looking unit with a carrying case. Shipping from Japan was a little high though, but when your spending $500 on a console, what's an extra $80 in shipping.

Still waiting for someone to US/JPN region mod the cartridge side of a Wondermega2 to see if it's the same procedure as the one I wrote for the JVC X'Eye. (should be if the Wondermega2 is based around the Mega Drive 2 / Genesis 2 315-XXXX processor) Of course the jumper would initally be set to GND instead of +5v.

The walkthrough how to install a US/JPN switch on a JVC X'Eye to play Japanese Mega Drive CARTRIDGES (had a mix up in another thread about that) is at my website. I'd really just like to see what the area pin 107 (if it uses a 315-XXXX) runs to on the motherboard since I know there were slightly different boards in a Wondermega2. Using the same method it may very well be possible to get a Wondermega2 to play region locked Genesis cartridges.

Until that's worked out, the JVC X'Eye slips ahead of the Wondermega2 just a hair since it gives it the ability to play Japanese Mega Drive games, even those with region lockouts as well as its native library. However if/once that gets worked out for the Wondermega2, it will pull back ahead in the features department.
