I'm looking for what some of the best hockey games are for the Genesis/Super Nintendo. I have NHL All Stars 95, and and NHLPA 93. My brother and I really like those games, and were wondering what are some other really good ones.

i thought the best one was NHL 94, the only problem with the NHL games was that the stats would glitch at somepoint in the season mode and screw things up. I fyour not going to play season games and just play multiplayer this dosn't matter. but that was my favorite.
listen......you smell something??
I would say NHL 94 for the Genny...and Blades OF Steel for the NES
I really dig Ice Hockey for the NES.
Blades of Steel soley for the fact that whoever loses the fight gets the penalty. But 94 is pretty darn good too.
NHL 94 for SNES
I've heard great things about Mutant League Hockey for the Genesis.
NHL '97, Saturn.
La Fontane scores!!!!!
Everyone says NHL 94 because that one sold the most copies and is typically the last one they bought for the system. I say it's 95, because the control is better, the Season mode is more well-designed, and it's far less buggy. I'm a fan of the 95 create-a-player mode too.
I'm referring to the SNES, in case you're wondering.
The same thing happens in Ice Hockey. Gotta love button mashing.Originally Posted by jcalder8

Ryborg makes a good case for why many pick 94. I actually dig NHL 96 on the Genesis quite a bit. My friends and I played that long after the Genny went out of style. I'd also recommend, though less so, NHL 98. It was among the last year of sports games made for the system, but it's pretty good too. Really, the differences in game play are noticeable from year to year be it subtle (96-98) or glaring (94-any year after). You'll have to try them out and find your favorite, I guess.
Mutant League Hockey is also very fun if you can get your hands on a copy. Though it's not nearly as fun as its sister game Mutant League Football, but that's another topic.
I don't play hockey games very much, but when I do, it's either NHL Stanley Cup for the SNES or Mutant League Hockey for the Genesis.
I 2nd this Brett Hull Hockey for PC was also alittle fun to play.Originally Posted by Kevincal

Enough said!
I play Blades of Steel (NES) and NHL 95 (Genesis) the most, by far, of all the hockey games I own.
NHL 95 is especially appealing to me as I actually owned it for SNES in the day (still do of course), although I now prefer the Genesis version (sports games just feel tighter on the genny).
The main reason I like it though are the rosters. I *love* playing as the Nordique with Sakic, Nolan, and Sundin on a line (you have to manually create the line, but it's worth it if you're playing without line changes!!!)
I also have a soft spot for the first NHL game that had the Senators (NHL 93?). I loved the challenge of taking them through the Stanley Cup playoffs (they *stunk* then, and they *stink* now!!!)
Time will be when the broadest river dries
And the great cities wane and last descend
Into the dust, for all things have an end
I like Blades of Steel but you get into fights every 10 seconds and it loses it's appeal after a while and gets annoying.
I *loved* Stanley Cup when it came out, but it has NOT aged well. I broke it out a month ago and it was basically unplayable. The style of play of Stanley Cup and NCAA Basketball for the SNES was great at the time, not so much now. I can still go back and get into Ice Hockey, Blades of Steel and older hockey games, but never Stanley Cup.Originally Posted by DigitalSpace
Not if you button mash before the actual fight starts. You'll usually knock the other player down (unless you're playing against another human who is also mashing). Or you can simply not hit any button, get knocked down, and avoid the fight.Originally Posted by aaronpetrosky

I used to have the same problem with NHL 95. This usually happened if I won too many games in a row without a defeat or if one player piled up far too many of one stat, goals or assists. The AI in the game wasn't that good.Originally Posted by steveant1636

You have to lose at least one or two games and keep your goals/assists down for your top players, otherwise those type of bugs will happen in the season mode of most NHL games on Genesis. If your record is creeping near 30-0 or 40-0, you will HAVE to throw a game on purpose, otherwise the stats will get buggy. Guess these guys wanted to keep some sense of parity or never expected gamers to master this title.
Just my personal experience.............a similar problem used to happen in the World Series Baseball games on Genesis, particularly the first two. Home runs were so easy to hit with power hitters that once you piled up too many in one season, your home run number would actually reset to 0.
Back to NHL 95:
As for the game itself, I recall that some fans were divided on NHL 95 because wasn't that the one which had no fighting? I believe fighting was possible in 94', not in '95, but back in the game by '96.
NHL 95' had great music, play control and one timers. The wrap around shots were still the easiest way to pile up goals and worked way better than the one-timers.
