    Default Playstation question

I read on Wikipedia that a white version of the PS1 had the ability to play VCDs. Was this released in America, or was it Japan only?

I'm not sure if they came from the factory that way; but I DO know that a couple years ago there was a modding service in Canada (closed down now) that advertised PSOnes that could be bought from them with a mod-chip preinstalled and the ability to play VCDs. I'm still kicking myself for not ordering one from them before they went out of business. I always assumed that the mod-chip they were installing is what gave it the ability to do this.. but I could be wrong as I've never seen a chip with the ability to do that yet. Your explanation makes more sense.

Yes, there is a White version of the original model Playstation that has VCD playback as standard. It was only released in Hong Kong (afaik) and can be quite hard to come by, from what I understand.

Certainly a very collectable Playstation curiosity, in my opinion.

There was also a plugin for the parallel port that allowed the same thing. That may also have allowed Gameshark etc abilities. I recall seeing it being sold some time back.

Ding Ding! We have a winnah!

It was a Hong Kong exclusive system. They do show up on ebay, but they are pretty rare. It'll be an NTSC-J system, so your not going to get much American gaming goodness out of it unfortunately.
Because it makes no attempt to be great, it is therefore extremely great.

I have one of the units that plugs into the back of the Playstation giving it the ability to play VCD's, bought it at a local thrift store. Had a $3 price tag on it, but when I went to the cashier they told me it was 1/2 off day! So I got it for $1.50!

It's a total piece of crap!
