Default The PlayStation SCPH-1001: What known issues does it have?

I've recently acquired a PS1 SCPH-1001 model with a modchip in it. I am considering switching it over to being my main PS1. However, I noted that it gets very warm on the left side of the system, even when it's off. Is this model known to overheat? How much playtime can I get before it does?

It seems to be working correctly...but the heat is worrisome. My SCPH-7501 does not get warm at all, even after playing it for over an hour, and my PSone doesn't get that hot either.

From what I've heard, this model of the PS1 is prone to overheating issues because of inadequate airflow. Use it for playing your imports, but don't consider it to be your primary machine.

And if it heats up just being plugged in, there may be something wrong in the power supply that needs to be checked out, STAT!

All I can say is to turn it all the way off, from the switch on the back.

Switch on the back? I don't see one.

Are you sure it's not supposed to heat up just being plugged in? I mean, it's not like it's hot. It's just a little warm...oh hell. I hope I don't have to fix the power supply.

Anyone know if I can just swap out the SCPH-7501's power supply with the SCPH-1001? I'd prefer to just do that if there really is a problem with the power supply. I also have a PSone, so I figured I'll use my PSone as the main machine and my SCPH-1001 as the import/pirate machine. I hate having to have 2 PS1's hooked up, but oh well. Stupid Sony and their defective first gen machines.

Oh nevermind, I thought you were talking about the PS2.

Add extra ventilation, take the innards out and drill some small holes.

get the spare laser module in case yours went bad
early models are apparently prone to the laser module going bad rather early

I've had my SCPH-1001 since launch. I did have to send it in for repairs when it was hit during a lightning storm the first year

The original laser can go bad on you. Sony was nice enough to replace mine when I sent it in for repairs.

Yes, the SCPH-1001 is prone to overheating. Don't set it on the carpet to play. It needs ventilation. I would also recommend unplugging it when you're not playing it. I noticed mine getting hot too even when I'm not playing it.

If you take care of it, it should last you for a while. Mine has been running for 10 going on 11 years now.
    Take care,
    Dennis

Would one of these help with the heating-cooling issue? NIB, and up for fair (ie, low value) trade if OP is interested. I don't need it, just thought it would be neat to have...

Sounds like the start of a power supply problem. I would upplug it when not in use for now but it sounds like you will need a new supply at some point, which is easy to replace. A nice thing about PSX's and PS1 is that there is alot of them out there so parts are pretty cheap and they are relatively easy to fix/mod.
