Default Optical Paddle for "Tempest 2000" (Atari Jaguar)

Optical Paddle Solution for "Tempest 2000"

When I am not writing guides, such as for "Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories" (PS2), for GameFAQs, I can be found doing various hacks to consoles and controllers.

The above link describes my adventures in making a Logitech Wingman Warrior work for "Tempest 2000" on the Atari Jaguar. Anybody who plays "Tempest" or "Tempest 2000" knows that the best way to play is with a real paddle controller. On the Jaguar version there is a hidden menu that will allow you to activate the Rotary Controller option. Once you select the Rotary then you can use a paddle controller.

But all of the homebrew paddles made use a multipole digital rotary. I felt that the best solution would be from a optical rotary like those used in mice. This joystick gave me the solution I wanted for this problem. I still have a lot of work to do before it is fully functional but I felt I should share this with the retro gamers here.

It will be damn cool when it is completed.

Optical paddles are more responsive and don't wear out as quickly (since there are no contacts to rub against). Besides, the actual paddle controller for the original "Tempest" game is a optical device. So, if you wire one of them up right you can use the REAL "Tempest" paddle for this game. With the popularity of MAME somebody has been making replacement "Tempest" paddles for use with emulators.
