    Default Gran Turismo 2000

    Got a new video capture device today and i remembered i said i would post some pics of Gran Turismo 2000. I don't know if it's really a prototype as it was kind of given out to the public, so that's why i'm putting it here.

    By popular request, i turned one of the pics into a wallpaper at 1024x768:

    GT 2000 was simply the working title for GT3:A-spec.

    Yep, the name was only changed due to the game being delayed. GT 2000 was the name the title had before release, I think it was still called that at E3 in 2001 even.

    The engine from GT 2000 was scrapped in october of 2000 due to "quality issues". Sony didn't feel the graphics were up to par for the PlayStation 2, and weren't going to let GT 2000 ship.

    GT 2000 used a heavily modified version of the GT 2 engine, GT 3: A-spec was written from the ground up for the PS2.

    GT 2000 != GT3

    That never occurred it looks like, unless your the only person I can find that publically states that (And I doubt that since this would've been significant news in 2000, but I've been wrong many times before, I'd love to be proved wrong). What you have is simply a early build I suspect, many titles don't look very attractive at first. In late October, Sony was still showing off GT3 footage that year. What I said is the reason behind the name change (occurred in September 2000), and here is a quick IGN article that basically confirms it. And on October 23, 2000, Kazunori Yamauchi talked with IGN about how far along Gran Turismo 3 was.

    Edit - I found a few links after posting this that mirror somewhat what you stated, but they state that it still uses a heavily modified GT2 engine and they they scrapped the car models only and redid them. I'd love to hear more from you though, I'm no GT expert and IGN is hardly the best source in the world for me to rely on.

    I thought GT 2000 was scrapped too. I don't remember the reasoning but I thought it was supposed to be a holdover until GT3 (which was notoriously late showing up on shelves)

    I think you may have me on the date, i'm going off of memory. I know it was fall of '00.

    From what i was told at the time, Sony didn't like how GT 2000 was shaping up. It wasn't 'PlayStation 2' enough for them. They were putting pressure on the dev team to redesign.

    I also remember Sony declaring that GT3:a-spec was "designed from the ground up for the PS2", or some such nonsense.

    At the time, i was told that the delays for GT3 were because they were forced to scrap the GT2000 engine and start over. Is it gospel? I dunno, it's just what the official line was 6 years ago
