Default How Can I Play NTSC-J PSone Games On A PS2?

I recently found NTSC-J copies of Fatal Fury: Real Bout and Fatal Fury Wild Ambition at a Pawn Shop for just $1.99 each, and i'm looking for a cheap way to play them on my American PS2.

    Any suggestions?

flip top cover or slide tool with swap disc is your cheapest easiest option.

Swap magic only works with ps2 games. You'll need a modchip if you want to play ps1 imports.

If you don't want to mod your PS2, you could always play them on an emulator like ePSXe, provided you can dump your own BIOS. If you want to play other Japanese games, you could pick up a Japanese PS - there are usually quite a few on eBay, and possibly some from domestic sellers if you want to save on shipping.

dont do what I did and assume that a mod chip wouldn't harm your system in some way. I had mine done professionally but was not informed that certain legit retail games will no longer work. And disabling the chip makes the laser not work also.

I don't know what kind of chip you got but disabling the chip should not make the laser not work. You probably got a budget chip or it was installed improperly. I've been installing these things for years and haven't seen a case of this.

Not quite. Flip top lid and a PSX gameshark disc (or equivalent) will work fine. The PSXchanger disc, which is golden for the PSX, will do nothing but lock up your PS2, however.

I don't know what the going rate for a fliptop is these days. Maybe $15? Or you could DIY, if you don't mind your PS2 lookin' janky. Of course, you'd still have to buy a Gameshark disc, if you don't have one. I'm sure you could find one cheap.

SO, let's say $20? How's that compair to a mod chip?

You can probably get a modded PS1 for not much today, might be the easiest and best route.

Or a JPN one for that matter.

I hadn't even thought about that.
