Default sega mega-tech and mega play arcade machines

these seem to be the arcade version of the genesis.

my question is : do these systems just play mega-drive/ genesis games or are these souped up versions of the games.

i was looking at screen shots of the systems and the mega-tech games looked like souped up versions of the home games and the mega play games looked like the home versions

the confusing thing i saw was a coment that the mega-tech system was mastersystem based. Looking at the games i dont see why sega would have made a system to play upgraded genesis games on mastersystem hardware.

Does anyone have one of these systems that could shed some more light on my question (are the games just genny/mega drive or souped up arcade versions)

AFAIK Mega Tech was genesis/megadrive based, thus the SMS compatibility.

They're exactly the same. You can verify this in MAME.

I have a Mega Tech cart myself (Shadow Dancer), although I don't own an MT board. I used to have some information up at my personal homepage but it's been pulled...I should fix that.

I should mention that Shinobi (the SMS game on Mega Tech) reportedly has a heavier cart (should have a Power Base Converter inside), and all games have a second selection screen (like that of the PlayChoice 10 games). Mega Tech carts use the same shape shells that Japanese Mega Drive games do.

I almost bought a Mega Tech about five years ago, but wound up passing. Other than MVS games at this point, I'm really not into any arcade hardware newer than, say, 1985, but I think I'd scoop up a Mega Tech if I found one on the cheap.

It'd be neat to have, but I'd personally rather use the space for something else. They're pretty ugly.

how disappointing -- looking at the screen shots - i could have sworn the games looked better than on mega tech than my genesis version
