    Default I've Created a Monster!

Well last night while at the local gamestop buying a used wavebird controller I convinced my girlfriend to pick up Atelier Iris. She has been interested in playing an RGB after watching me go through so many, but wanted to play something "classic" on a current console (still not sure why she scoffed at my suggestion to play FFIII).

Needless to say I haven't been able to get near my PS2 since. She's nuts for it.

So I want to know if there are any other RPG's out for the current generation that have the same classic feel? She's into turn based right now because it's a bit easier for her (she's gotten discouraged in the past with action RPG games where she couldn't master the controlsl fast enough to keep up with hectic combat). Also something that not extrmemly long, maybe 30 hours or less to complete.

Mainly I'm just looking for 16-bit ish RPGs. Like I said turn based preffered, but real time would be cool as long as the conbat isn't overly difficult/complex.

She's just starting out it what I think is a great genre, and I don't want her to get discouraged and swear them off because she tried to tackle something like DQ VIII in a wekkend but couldn't.

And I plan to keep working on her to try and get her to play actual 16 bit RPGs

She had been interested in playing an RGB
    She's a keeper.

Lol, sorry you meant RPG, right?

I think she'd dig the Mario Superstar Saga and it's sequel.

It's a little on the expensive end but Suikoden 1 would be ideal for what you are asking. The first time I beat it I was just over 20 hours.

Well Atelier Iris 2 is the obvious answer. But reality of it is there just aren't that many classic RPGs for PS2. Dragon Warrior VIII also isn't some big complicated RPG, unless she has trouble with 3D in general, otherwise it's a good choice. Straight forward linear RPG with a classic menu based battle system. Grandia III is also a good one, but the action gauge takes a little getting used to.

Since you have a GameCube I'd recommend Paper Mario, Skies of Arcadia, and maybe Tales of Symphonia bearing in mind the last one's not turned based.

Other option is go with buying old PSOne games, unlike the PS2 there's plenty of good classic looking RPGs for that system. Just to name a few:

    Breath of Fire III
    Breath of Fire IV
    Final Fantasy IX
    Grandia
    Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete
    Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete
    Persona 2: Eternal Punishment
    Suikoden
    Suikoden II
    Wild Arms
    Xenogears

But what other systems do you own?

I'll suggest the Paper Marios, Grandia III and DQ VIII since I guess they're not that difficult (I'm not sure why but I had the impression that DQ VIII was a hulking beast of an RPG). And maybe when she's done with the first I'll get Atelier Iris 2. I also just got Magna Carta, so I try that as well.

I have most of those PSX RPGs (except for a few wich I recenly traded away for other PS2 RPG's), and I've been suggesting them along with SNES RPG's, but for some reason she's adament on playing the PS2 and GCN right now.

I also told her about Skies of Arcadia, and she was into Tales of Symphonia (she watched play through the entire thing), so maybe I'll get Tales of Legendia.

    And yes I meant RPG
And yes I'm in love with my new TV

We have SNES, N64, Dreamcast, PSX, PS2, GCN, and a 360 right now, and hopefully a Genesis pretty soon.

Skies of Arcadia is a good choice for a fledgling RPG player. My boyfriend whom does play games, hated the genre but had been interested in the Dreamcast version. He bought me the gamecube version for Valentines day and we played through it together... until I burned out towards the end. He picked it up and finished the game for me, while I watched. (:

Now it's something we do regularly, find a good RPG to play and beat the game together. Our latest conquest was Dragon Warrior VIIII and we've just started Grandia II.

But I digress, point was he really liked Skies. And I think he likes it because although the game recycles the same old formula it presents it in an interesting setting, the whole air pirates theme is very appealing. Game also features a likeable cast of well designed characters, and employs a very tradional battle system coupled with the extremely fun to play ship battles.
