Default Kind request for Bit Rot and CD Rot Images

    Hello,

I am doing an article concerning Bit Rot and CD Rot, and was wondering if anyone in the DP forums may have some hi-res shots of any protos with bit rot or cds containing cd rot.

If so, please e-mail them to service@gooddealgames with permission to use. Thanks again in advance.

    Best,
    Michael

Um, I think EEPROMS with Bitrot don't display any physical damage. The damage is to the contents of the item, and I don't think you can photograph uh... whatever they are.

As for Laserdiscs... I do know there's pictures of that on the internet.

with eproms - its the crystal growing back causing a change in the bits - your not going to see that with an ordinary camera

you may be able to casue a cd to oxidise by poking a pin hole into it and then dipping it in water and wait for the spot to form and take a pic of that (the only kind of cd rot ive seen)

I remember seeing a pic somewhere of a NES CHR rom (graphics) with bit rot. It was the bitrotted graphics, so that's sort of a good visualisation of bitrot.

I've had some bootleg Brazilian VCS games that were eeprom carts have bit rot. Some graphics are messed up and such. I think the main one that comes to mind is Spiderman. I know direct exposed UV erases these, but age does too, and I would imagine the high humidity of Brazil might, even.

I have a 1943 proto that is so heavily bitrotted ,every graphic tile in it is basicly just a blob of garbage I spose i could take some screenshots but the cart itself looks perfectly fine.

It would be interesting to do a dump of it once every 6 months to see how it fades by comparing the rom images.

If Blackjax's 'System Failure' page is archived anywhere, it had the article on bitrot, with real examples from a NES test cart.

It's pretty easy to spot. It'll look something like this:

    "011000111100112111001110000111111010010111001"

Heh, i was playing paper mario the other day and i pulled my N64 off the shelf accidentally, wich caused mario to turn into some wierd blob of static and then some debug menu or whatever to pop up.

The game still plays perfectly though.

yea the silicone slab (crystal) is aranged like a bunch of fuses and when you program (burn) it you are breaking the connections -- over time the connections can grow back thus changeing the bit the connection represents
