Might be a dumb question - but what does the red system disc give you? what does it do?

.... which is depends on the type of Saturn console you put this one into...

I've only tested mine with Dev Saturn which was ex-Konami and it worked but not sure whether it'd be the same with normal retail Saturn console???

Somebody reported that it did work on their japaneise retail saturn a while back, though it kinda sounds like BS to me

the reason i said that is when you open the CD door on retail Saturn it will send you to the booting menu, not the blank screen with insert disc message...

so unless you have the matching Dev saturn - these are usually came with Dev system. Two of such systems I got had the system disc inside anyway...

neverthless this is seriously cool piece of Saturn history and you don't see often the system disc on sale... ^ ^

A dev saturn is the same thing as a retail saturn (except for the odd prototype like the unit you have).

After you run the system disc on the saturn, it will still return you to the system's menu. The difference is that the system will no longer look for the 'security ring' on any discs you put in there. You can reset the console as many times as you'd like and it still won't look for the security ring. In order to return the console to normal operation, you have to turn the system off and back on (no, reseting doesn't do it).

The theory that sega used for both the saturn and the dreamcast was to eliminate specific 'development test machines'. They used standard retail units and left a back door to be triggered by a special system disc.

    Default black saturn system disc

Does anyone have both discs? Is there any difference in them being able to boot cd-rs? I heard that one disc boots third party games, and one boots sega games. That doesn't make sense to me. If all the boot disc does is remove the security check, then it shouldn't matter. Anyone know the answer to this?

    that's odd
I tested after reading this and on my JPN white as well as PAL units once i open the CD door it goes back to the menu screen and won't run the backup copy I made??? I'm sure I made the proepr copy since it runs on chipp'd unit?

The red one worked fine booting protos on my US V.2 retail Saturn.

lol. That's a pretty cool piece of software right there, definately would get it if I had possession of a Saturn atm. Hope you get a good price for it, and also am very interested if there's any final resolution to the whole first/third party debate.

The proto games that Good Deal Games had at CGE a couple years ago. The red disc is for 3rd party games, the black is for first party ones.

hope this answers any question one may have about Saturn System Disc... [courtesy of the posting on Ass*mbler Forum]
    ---

Q: Is it region specific or region free?
A: The system discs are region free, but the games on CD-R have to match the region of your system.

Q: Does the red disc only do 1st party cdrs?
A:The red disc KD01 is for titles published by SEGA. The black disc KD02 is for everything else.

Q: Except for completing your collection, why would you want a system disc when you can use the "swap trick" or install a modchip to play CD-Rs?
A: For a developer Saturn to accept CD-emulators (connected using SCSI) you need to disable the media check.
