Default Room of Doom Teaser Pics (56k Beware)

A few days ago, the Dallas Morning News contacted me about doing a feature on my gaming collection. This prompted me to finally put together a proper room of doom, or rather, rooms of doom! They are coming out tomorrow to shoot some video of my setup!

This is half of my living room, directly behind my couch.

    Spare bedroom number 1

    Spare bedroom number 2

Unfortunately, I don't have room for all of my loose stuff, but this is about 80% of what I have.

    Nice stuff!

When it is posted in the newspaper, scan the article so we can peep it out.

Thanks guys! My collection is smaller than a lot of others, but I'm pretty happy with what I have!

I think this is going to be an online thing. The reporter told me she wants to shoot some video of the collection and have me talk about it. I assume they will have it on their site, but I'll be sure to get a copy that we can all watch it(not that anybody wants to hear me babble about my stuff!!)

The pong thing is one of the official Pong clocks from Buro Vormkrijgers. If you google Pong clock, there's quite a bit of info on them. The short story is that a company in Europe came up with the idea and tried to market them, only to be sued by Atari. They made a deal and were allowed to make 400 of them to sell. I was lucky enough to get a hold of one of them. It just plays a game of pong all day long. Whenever it's time to bump the minutes, the left hand side loses the ball. When it's time to bump the hour, the right hand side loses. It's one of my absolute favorite pieces in that room!

The tank is a little wall hanging sculpture thing I picked up at CGE in 2004 (I think). It is a slightly stylized version of the Combat tank. I honestly have forgotten who made it. Maybe somebody else here can remember. I'll take a couple closeups of both of these for you when I get home tonight.

I lucked into that machine and got it for a steal. I replaced the production software with the prototype roms that makes it just that much more fun. The carpet race mode is hilarious!!

Wow bro, looks great!! I'll bet the interviewer is floored!

The only thing I would worry about is people getting your name and then getting your address. You don't want any thuggies coming and doing any shopping when you're not at home!

I like the blue paint you have the walls painted in your spare room, reminds me of arcades i used to go to when i was younger.

Excellent setup. One of the best organized ones I've seen.

Slight tangent: How does one go about getting "noticed" by the local press for this sort of thing anyway? Does the local press find out about you through the Web, or does a friend of a friend of friend have a friend in the press who decides to do a write-up?

It would be great to get my RoD covered in the local paper sometime; not to feed my ego or anything, but rather as an effort to unearth some other local classic gamer/collector types besides the one (ubikuberalles) I already know. (Okay, and maybe it would feed my ego a little bit.)

I've spoken to the interviewer about not using my whole name, but I'm still waiting to hear back from her. I'm not terribly worried as I have a great alarm system on the house that's plugged into the city police station. But yea, it would be a bad thing if someone decided to clean me out.

My story is a bit strange, but basically, my boss used to write reviews for the DMN. About 4 years ago, the main video game reviewer there wanted to do a big article on the 'average gamer', so my name came up. They did an interview with me and came to my house to shoot some stills. That ran in the paper and I thought, was forgotten. Late last week, somebody else from the DMN contacted me because they found my name in the old article and decided to email me. Fortunately, I'm still at the same email and we managed to work it so that I was interviewed again!

Truthfully, it is a big ego boost. I don't think of myself as a major collector, but to non-collector types, I guess I've got a pretty imposing room full of stuff! I'd love to have somebody contact me with a truck load of old systems they want to get rid of after watching the video, but I doubt that will happen. I mainly did it for the fun of it!

I'm never worried about people seeing my cabinets -- hell, I hate moving them and I actually paid money for them. I can't imagine thieves making off with too many of them before throwing their backs out. The small stuff is what I worry about.

And yeah, trust me, I know. It's a huge ego boost, especially when people you know call and say, "hey, I just saw your games in the newspaper!"

Here's the pics of the Pong clock and tank I promised. I also have a skull from the same place that did the tank, so I took a pic of it as well. I haven't been able to find my program from the last few CGE's, but maybe they are online somewhere??

    Anyway, enjoy!
