Wii Component Cables, Help!

So I looked on nintendo's website to see how I could use the component cables on my television set. It said you need the following inputs Pr, Pb, and Y. I have the inputs necessary although my tv is not HDTV. Its a 32" toshiba CRT. On the back are the PR and PB inputs are labeled as "color stream input". each input does have the marking "PR" and "PB" next to them. And of course the Y input.

I plug the cables in and the wii boots up fine, but when I change the resolution on the wii settings to 480p, the video signal becomes scrambled and totally unwatchable.

What is going wrong here? Is my TV not supportive of this resolution?

Another thing, I cant switch the resolution back cause I cant see anything! How do I reset!

It just seems that your TV is not capable of progressive scan. If you can't see anything try hooking up the Wii with composite cables.

Ok, I ghost-navigated through the menu and manged to change the resolution back to standard. Now answer me this question. My TV is not capable of progressive scan, but is it still an advantage over composite to use the component cables in standard resolution?

yes it is. i have a tv similar to yours(although, i have an HD as well now)

i didn't realize there were very many sets that had component but not proscan, but apparently there are.

regardless, component is going to give you a better picture than the cable your system came with.

First you have a standard TV, so don't set your Wii to 480p. Your TV doesn't output progressive scan.

...but still use your component cables. Component is a step up from S-Video and worthwhile to have on standard TVs. I used component cables long before HD TVs with progressive scan became affordable. Next time just buy an HDTV so you can enjoy a lot of Gamecube games and all Wii games in progressive scan.

In short: 1) a component cable alone doesn't output progressive scan, you need additionally an HDTV; 2) a standard TV with a Wii-component connection is certainly preferable over S-video or even composite (yikes).

BTW, if that happens to you again (e.g. for another system like the PS2) just re-connect the system with composite cables and you'll see a normal screen so you can reset the resolution to standard. It is very nervewracking to navigate through a scrambled screen. I think the Xbox goes automatically back to a normal setting if your TV isn't capable of progressive scan; the PS2 certainly does not.

Tell me about it. I spent a good hour trying to sort through the scrambled picture with my PS2 the first time I hooked it up to my HDTV. I eventually figured out what I did wrong, but for a few minutes I thought I broke the PS2.
