Does the screen show any indication the lid is open? If so, you may have a broken post or lid switch. If it tries to play but disc won't spin up, open up the PS1 and check to see if the cable leading to laser and motor is connected.

what happens is the screen goes to the CD or mem. card menu with the grid background. theres no audiable sound of the CD drive and the disc does not move.
this unit was working fine but rather noisey, then i went to power it up after using it night before and this is what happened.

It thinks the lid is open. You could go inside, and tape the "lid down" button down.

looks like that might be the case, there is a lot stickiness to the open button. so is this lid open button the small button in the hole next to the open button? know what i mean? when you say go "inside" are we talking screwdrivers here? if so is the anything i should watch out for when opening this sucker? any springloaded problems?
