    Default Hidden NES Gems

    Okay,

So as I guy who did most of his gaming on a C64 during the NES heyday, I'm suddenly become more interested in NES these days. So what are some hidden gems on NES?

Not the obvious popular games like Super Mario Bros, Megaman, Contra, Castlevania, Zelda, Bionic Commando, Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior, Mike Tyson's Punchout, Metroid, Excitebike, Dunk Hunt...etc...

And not stuff on the NES top 50 (although some of the games on the list seem to not quite be top 50 material to me)...
    http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1098

What's are some great NES games people may have never played?

    Thanks!

one vote for metal storm here. crisp visuals (for the nes), good controls and a great central mechanic; you pilot a mech that can flip gravity to pull up or down. it starts out as a fun little gimmick and quickly becomes the only thing that keeps you alive through increasingly hectic stages and boss fights.

I recommend Fire and Ice. I sat down to just try this game out and ended up playing it nonstop for 3 days till I beat it. Strangely addicting.

I love The Jungle Book. Lots of fun. I first discovered this when I was living in Ukraine and playing pirate Famicom carts on the Famiclone that I had bought (I think it was called "Liko") and had a blast with it. I assumed it was just European/Japanese only; I didn't realize until I got back to the U.S. that it was also on the NES.

Another game that I fell in love with when I was living there was Balloon Fight; I don't know how "obscure" that is but it is a less-obvious choice. Very, very fun game. Great clone of Joust, but more charming.

Also some less-obvious choices--I always thought that some of the games by Milton Bradley were pretty cool.

I really enjoyed Spy Hunter, RC Pro Am (a Rare Classic), and Gunsmoke. Gunsmoke is a great port of the arcade game and is actually unique. Its technically a shmup--but western themed.

I'll also throw in the original Top Gun. If you pick it up, let us know when you actually land on the aircraft carrier.

    Snow brothers.

I rented this a long time ago. This game can be compared to bobble bubble in game play. It was an arcade conversion. Very good arcade port.

GI Joe was an excellent sidescroller you should check out. (The one made by Taxan not Capcom). Isolated warrior is a very good isometric shooter thats worth a purchase. Also if you like Zelda try Crystalis it's pretty much superior in every way.

Cobra Triangle, another one from Rare, is kind of a spin-off from RC-Pro Am. It's got the same isometric 3-D view with fantastic animation, but you race boats instead, and you've got guns. There's also a power-up system that makes a nod to Gradius.

Lunar Pool is surprising really cool, as well. It's designed by Compile, so it's beautiful to look at, and it's a really fun take on billiards that I haven't really seen since.

I second Balloon Fight, as well.

Also make sure you check out Godzilla: Monster of Monsters. Also developed by Compile. It's way cooler than you'd expect. It's not perfect, and you may find that, after a few maps, it gets repetitive, but there are a lot of good ideas in there, and the execution is just great--very pleasing to see and hear. I bought this on a whim when I was a kid, and I'm surprised that I have as much respect for it as I do today.

Because you played a C-64 (which I can tell you a LOT about since my dad was a collector of that system -- he has shoeboxes filled with games), I hope these recommendations will help:

    Silent Service
    Golgo 13
    Deja Vu
    Uninvited
    Rocket Ranger
    Solstice

I wish modern day companies would remake these (especially Silent Service, which I think would work as a Medal of Honor/Splinter Cell type of game).

If you have a power pad, check out Eggsplode. It's a pretty fun game. There was another game on the cart called Short Order.

If you're into shoot them ups, may I suggest the following:

    Zanac
    Dragon Spirit: The New Legend
    Gun-nac
    S.C.A.T.

    and to a lesser degree:
    Star Soldier
    Sky Shark
    Sky Kid

Low G Man has always been one of my favorites that doesn't get much attention.

And I second Metal Storm and Snake, Rattle & Roll. Golgo 13 is good, but I like the sequel, The Mafat Conspiracy, more.

I'll definitely go with Golgo 13: Top Secret Episode and Friday the 13th. Both feel pretty unique when put side-by-side with other games.

I've always liked the Data East games Karnov and Werewolf: The Last Warrior. Karnov is, well... Karnov! It's a pretty cool game with TONS of secrets throughout the game (read: great replay value). Werewolf feels a bit odd at first because the B button is used to jump, but for some reason it doesn't end up hindering the gameplay. All the characters are very comic book-esque, as well as presenting one heck of a challenge.

Speaking of challenge, if you like to test yourself, check out Rolling Thunder, or Treasure Master. Those games will give you a run for your money, and still retain some interest. I'm especially fond of Rolling Thunder.

Oh! I don't know if anyone above mentioned this game, but The Battle of Olympus. It plays alot like the side view parts on Zelda II, but it's set around Greek mythology. It's a great adventure, but it's another really challenging game overall.
