Default PS1 "Dual Analog" controller (not Dual Shock)

First off, this is my first post ever on the digitpress forums, so hi everybody.

    Down to business...

This morning a customer at my store traded in a "Dual Analog" controller for the original Playstation. Not the DualShock, but the original, apparently very rare, "Dual Analog".

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dual_Analog_Controller

It's the USA version, not the Japanese one.
Anybody have any idea what these things are worth? I can't find anything on eBay, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance guys.

Does it have the analog sticks with the "rounded in" top (like in the Wiki picture bottom black model?), I can never remember if that's referred to as concave or convex. If so.. those are quite rare.. but it's not like they're worth a fortune.. it's a controller.. not a Turbo Duo. More of an oddity than anything else.

In fact.. the last time I saw any of those kind on eB was about a year ago (Though I don't actively search for them and like the Wiki article says.. most people don't even notice the difference.). Some guy had a pair of them and he actually advertised them as "prototype" Sony controllers. I had a watch on them and they ended up going for less than $10 for the pair. I kicked myself for not paying closer attention to when the auction ended.

I had one of these when they originally came out in 1997 and frankly, I preferred them to the dual shocks- easier to hold, and I much preferred the concave sticks to the rubber-tipped ones (compare- xbox 260 analogue sticks).

Found a possible candidate on ebay- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Playstation-Co...QQcmdZViewItem -zero bids and still £1 so I think the part of that article about its collectability was maybe being a little melodramatic.

I assume you believe they are rare now and not originally rare, because the many endcaps of them at my local Best Buy when they were first released says otherwise. I remember thinking how terrible of a position the sticks were in. I had already sold my PS1 at that point (got tired of waiting for FF7) and moved on to the real analog controller, the N64.

Don't these come with the slim PSOnes?

The analogs are concave, and the whole controller is *slightly* larger. The japanese version has rumble, the US does not. Strangely i have a proto version of the US (has the US part number) that still has the rumble. Nothing like Sony cost cutting...

Yeah, it's the same one as in the eBay auction. Maybe it's not worth anything after all.

Oh well, I'll keep checking it out, thanks guys.

    That's a kickass looking controller.
I'm especially interested with the longer hand grips, as I have always benefitted from a larger controller. I'm definitely going to keep my eye open for this.

I remember those days. All "rarity/collectors value" aside, people who bought this controller were pretty much owned when the Dual Shock came out not long afterward....

Here's to hoping it's worth the effort.
As I searched on eBay, this was the only copy and it ended only a couple hours after this one, however at least there's an actual photo which verifies it's the real deal.

Based on the original idea of this topic I think it's safe to say these are pretty uncommon but due to the fact the knowledge about them is so limited the price shouldn't be too high due to lack of interest. I'm quite pleased to have snagged one so fast and from eBay no less. Not even Yahoo Japan had any on within the last couple days while eBay only had that one definite auction.
