Default (PCB PICS) NES proto, or bootleg, or what? (Karate Champ)

THE NEW PICS (PCB) ARE AT THE END....

A young man I know from another site mentioned an "odd" Karate Champ NES cart he obtained at a yard sale. This is what he told me via email:

-Panel where pins are on is colored brown, not white, and pins go all the way across instead of stopping in the middle.
-Flat head screws are used to hold cart together instead of the normal bolts
-On the top panel of NES cart theres normally a little "bump thing" on the left and right, this one is just flat on both sides

I asked about differences during play and he said:

Heres a small one -Level 2 of the game (according to various screenshots) has an orange ground, on my copy its white/yellow.

He also mentioned that the pins are different from other games he has.

Here are some links to pics of the cart:

THANKS in advance for any insight you can provide to my young collector friend and I!

This is what's called a "5-screw" variant. These are the original style that Nintendo used up until about 1987. The other type they used is called a "3-screw" variant, which have the "bump things" and use security screws. These carts have "Rev. A" on the bottom-right corner on the back label. Note that the pins in the middle of a NES cartridge go straight to the expansion port on the bottom. Since the expansion port was never used, Nintendo removed them on their later cartridges to save money.

Looks like a normal cart, but you will need to open the cart up to determine if there is anything different about it.

The pins "stopping in the middle" on the NES carts only started in about '89 or '90. (Tetris was the first one I saw), so I don't think there's anything abnormal about that cart.

Hey Bassgrabber I have a NES list that includes the 5-screw variants. Just PM me if you would like it. I got it off of DP a while ago. I am sure you can find it if you search the threads.

You do actually have a rather rare cart there. In fact I just emailed like 30 ebay resellers a couple days ago, many of which had many copies of the game. And only 2 had this one and so now I finally have one on the way. What you have there is "Revision 0", which must have some bugs or something, because the vast majority are revision A.

I've been running a redumping project for the NES, that is one of the last few revision 0's that hasn't been dumped. I have a site setup http://bootgod.dyndns.org:7777/

that covers everything that has been done so far.

You say you're missing Stadium Events...I personally dumped an NTSC version with CopyNES maybe 2-3 years ago, I guarantee it's clean.

Yeah I don't doubt that one is good, in fact I was planning on sticking it in there if I can get a PCB shot of it. The only stuff that is in the DB at this point is stuff that has been processed with the software I wrote for it.

That's cool, I just wanted to make sure you weren't losing sleep over whether or not the ROM dump itself was clean!
