I just won an item and paid, and the seller sent a message asking me to send $5 more for shipping because of it's weight.
It's only $5, but shouldn't I only have to pay for what the auction stated?
No his problem. He mess up with shipping.
Agreed. Yeah, it's only $5 more....but what's stopping him from asking the next person for $10 extra?
The auction ended, he goofed, his loss.
Thanks, I had a feeling that was the case. I think my response was decent.
"Hi there. I actually cannot add the $5 extra. The item and shipping cost in the auction is the amount I am required to pay. I found this out the hard way when I did something similar (I had the shipping cost rather low and ended up having to pay extra). Might I suggest using the shipping calculator next time? Thanks alot Sorry I couldn't be of more help."
I think the response was well written. Hopefully he understands!
Personally for me it would depend on what he wanted to charge for shipping. If it was far a large, heavy box of games and he made an honest mistake with the quote then of course I'd pay the additional $5. Everyone makes mistakes. You CAN look up a shipping rate on UPS or USPS.com to verify that he's charging you an honest amount.
If you think that the shipping was cheap and good to begin with, I would give him the money. I've had a couple items come damaged because the seller "undercharged" for shipping and packaged it very poorly to try and make up for it.
I guess more information would be needed. For example, did you get a good deal in the first place .. which might make you in a good mood over the buy? Is it a large lot and does the seller usually sell individuals and simply forgot to change the setting? Did the seller add to the description noting the error? Is it a valuable/collectible item that you don't want damaged? If it's any of the four conditions, I would consider the extra $5. If it just looks like seller's remorse and a way to squeeze extra out of you, then it would be a "No" from me.

Make the decision you feel morally right doing.
Or just be a complete asshole and file a paypal claim over the extra shipping payment after it gets there.
Ask yourself - do you want to be part of the problem?
My main policy on shipping - if I undercharge, it's my loss. If I overcharge a lot, I give refunds.
He -should've- calculated a proper price. If he's sending a ton of stuff at the same time, then I'd give him the extra five bucks if that meant it would go priority, or at least properly packaged.
If someone asks me for five more dollars and ends up sending an item via media mail in a bubble mailer? I'd report their asses to eBay.
Yeah pretty much. I never quote shipping costs in my auctions and ask people to send me a message if they want a quote. I'll ship anywhere, so there's 14 different zone worldwide rates from the UK for large packages (and 3 for smaller packages). Coupled with either having it sent air or surface, insured or not (varying costs depending on value), tracked or not... TOO MANY COMBINATIONS!
Hence why I get people to ask for quotes to where they are. That way we both know exactly what they'd have to pay before bidding.
