Odds are it's not dirty. If it reads one and not the other, one of the lasers needs a potentiometer adjustment. In your friends case, the DVD pot needs the tweak.

Depending on the model of the PS2, it is either very involved, or Very Very involved. I am usually forced to do a total disassemble, then dremel a hole in the chassis, so I can access the pots with the unit on. Once I can do that, it's adjust, then test, repeat. The pot is extremely fragile, and pressure sensistive. If you put too much pressure on the pot, you destroy it, and in turn, destroy the laser. Guess how I know?

I do it here as a part of my little side business. I've successfully pot adjusted about 20 (and counting) Ps2's. Occasionally the laser is dead, and the whole exercise is pointless. I've had that happen a couple of times.

Good luck to your friend. You can send it to Sony, but they charge a very pricey flat rate. For a pot adjust, I charge half what they charge for what they call a "general repair" .

There's a couple DRE FAQs over at www.gamefaqs.com Are you sure it's not dirty? A can of compressed air would quickly tell if it was dirty or if it needs adjustment.

If it's not reading CDs, the spindle is covered with dust. I made a step-by-step cleaning guide on Voodoomoose.

Ps. I also made a thread in this forum that's just a few posts down. HAH!

I've cleaned many a dirty PS2 as well, using a method similar to Saitoh's guide (but using denatured alcohol, and photogrphic lens cleaners). My experience tells me that the odds are good it may need a pot adjust. Always clean it first and test. Never do more than you have to. In my experience (over 30 PS2's) when it won't read anything reliably, 2 out of 3 times it's dirty. If it won't read one kind of disc, but reads others flawlessly, 2 out of 3 times it needs a pot tweak.

Clean it and good luck. Be very careful of the fragile power switch ribbon cable. Break that, and it gets involved very quickly.

as someone pointed out you need to calibrate the laser. to do so you need an oscilliscope. instructions on how to do the callibration can be found here..
