    Default The Death Of Pac-Man

    Fellow players,

It's finally happened. Pac-Man has been murdered. No, this isn't even comparable to the time Namco/Bandai molested the yellow fellow with the release of Namco Museum Remix. Nay, this is far worse. And I have hard evidence of the murder...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3A8LqPu6ts

He's been molded into something he's not. Yes, Pac-Man's starred in some other party games and cash ins- but nothing withstands this monstrosity. Pac-Man has lost his original appeal, and Namco/Bandai has done the inevitable- make him a "family fun" character. Pac-Man was the icon of hardcore, arcade gaming- a matter of memorizing patterns on boards and of course a bit of platforming here and there with the PacMan World series.

Discuss. The funeral is sometime this fall, but the murderers have not yet announced the exact date they will bury him to rest with the other long-lost gods of the gaming world.

Well I suppose now they've finally stuck the last sword onto his battered body. He was in fair shape until the Namco Museum Remix came along, when he was beaten half to death. This game's the gravel for him- it truly is the end.

That was much different- he retained his usual 3D style and it was only meant as a simple diversion. This time, however, Pac-Man and his ghost rivals has been given a snappy makeover to make him appeal to only small children and only the most dedicated Pac-Fans. Given they're taking the "family fun" route, Namco will get more sales. That's the only thing that matters to companies of the present- money. They'll fuck him up even more, selling trash to moronic little kids who jump at anything- shitty or not.

WTF. Saying this on a retro board. This isn't the first Pac Man party game, it's not going to 'kill' Pac Man. Get over it.
Because it makes no attempt to be great, it is therefore extremely great.

3D style? What are you talking about? Pac-Man is and always has been a 2D game. All those remakes and derivatives are just as much to blame for destroying the franchise as this new game. Pac-Man lost credibility the second they tried to attach some kind of ridiculous back story to the character in the 80s.

By usual 3D style, I meant the new look they gave him circa 1999 with the release of PacMan World. I wasn't even in favor of that, but the games still weren't terrible pieces of shit. The only Pac-Man I play nowadays is the original and Ms.Pacman- the only ones worth touching at all these days.

Yup, I feel that Mrs. Pacman was the last good Pacman game. And that was a LONG time ago.

A huge corporation whoring out their successful franchises... Frankly, I'm shocked.

Let's start an online petition and show those evil capitalist swine what we think about their malarkey!

As far as 3D updates go I thought Mrs. Pacman Maze Madness rocked. Crisp graphics, amazing soundtrack and the extra dose of puzzle elements like TNT, fans and springs were woven in seamlessly.

You need to get out of the dark ages and try Pac-Man C.E. The fact that Bandai-Namco will be releasing a DX version of C.E. this fall with dozens of new maze changes and new modes is worth celebrating the series for years to come.

The look of the ghosts is nothing new, I believe they used that style in Pac n Roll for the DS.

Games cost so much make these days, there are tons of 'epic' games that lose money. Frankly, I'm surprised there aren't more Pac Man spin offs. Companies need to have some 'sure bets' in there to stay alive.

I've never understood people who say things like 'The new Transformers movie is raping my childhood!' or 'The Guitar Hero franchise is being run into the ground!'. If you think it looks bad don't play it! It's not going to erase your memories of the original and you can still go back and play the ones you like.

    How about Pac-Mania?

I still think this is much ado about nothing. And there's always gonna be yet another port of Pac-Man -- it's faster to name the platforms that never had him in any form that those that did.

Oh, and there had been weird Pac-games in the past. The ill-fated Pac-Land, based on the cartoon, anyone? How about Baby Pac? I played that one (combo videogame and pinball machine) at Philly Classic in 2002 and although it's an interesting idea, the end result is disappointing.

That game cannot possibly be worse than the Pac Man cartoon. Pac Man was never hardcore. Ever. Pac Man makes money for Namco, so they whore out the character. Have you ever seen the Pac Man cartoon? It is horrible. Absolutely fucking terrible. Unless you grew up on it, then something something childhood. Whatever. I'll keep playing good Pac Man games and ignoring the old ones.

Send the individual petitions to me and I'll add them to the list/pile of grievances I'm collecting... Resolution could take some time. Just so you all know.
