Default N64 emulation getting better on PSP

My all-time favorite game on the N64 is Sin & Punishment. I have played the crap out of it.

I haven't tried out the N64 emulator for the PSP for some time... last time I tried it only ran a few games at anything approaching full speed. It crashed on Sin & Punishment

I tried it out last night and the newest version is much improved! The sound is still better left OFF but some of the games like Zelda, Mario 64, & Mario Kart appear to be running at near full speed.

I decided to give Sin & Punishment a go and I'll be damned if it didn't boot up! There's a LOT of glitching and the colours are WAY off but it's playable. The control scheme is weird (the N64 game uses an unusual control layout) but overall I am very pleased. I can't wait for the next revision! Maybe it will play Stunt Racer 64... the BEST racer on the N64, bar none.
Thanks for indulging my gaming habit when I was young, Dad. You were the best. I miss you. ~David Barnes 1926-2007~

This is good news. The last time I used N64 emulation on my PSP it was horrible.

whats the point of a n64 emu on the psp. the psp is lacking buttons. it as pointless as playing ps1 or saturn games on it.

    n64 controller got 10 buttons, a d pad and a thumbstick.
psp got 8 buttons, d pad and a thumbstick

    how does that work?

i say forget the psp n64 emu and make a better wii 64 emu

It is very simple. When it comes to emulation on things, many times it becomes a situation of "because I can".

    Kind of like Linux fanboys.

It also leads to better emulation on lower-end platforms. Realistically, the NullDC team never plans on getting emulation running even near perfectly on the PSP, but it serves as a great way to optimize code

It depends on the game, not every game requires every button and you could just change the control configurations up when you need to. I fully played Zelda OOT with nothing more than a PSX type gamepad. It was a bitch at some parts (especially when it came to aiming the bow and arrow) and not the ideal way to play the game, but I did it.

I honestly wouldn't recommend it, but can't knock on them for trying.

Even on the PC, N64 emulation has a long way to go. I haven't checked for quite a while, but I remember Beetle Adventure Racing being almost unplayable on every emulator.

I think music is a big part of gaming, the fact that the N64 emulator doesn't run one game full speed with music playing makes me believe it'll never really run at a playable speed for most every game but a few.
Everything in the above post is opinion unless stated otherwise.

Beetle Adventure Racing is playable -- it's just that the graphics aren't even right. The cars in the game on the PC are usually gray or black. If you have a dual-core machine with a high-end graphics card, you're good to go. I know for sure that Indiana Jones can't even boot.

I would love it if N64 emulation on the PC would get right first before anyone worries about N64 emulation on PSP, Wii, DS, etc.

Someone has already made this point but i'll make it again... there are lots of N64 games that don't require the use of every button on the controller.

Same thing for PS1 and Saturn games.

    Seriously.

If I get (good working) portable Blast Corps and Goldeneye, I'll be a happy camper.
RIP bargora, you will be greatly missed. That is how we do things on Giedion Prime.

It's crazy to think that a decade ago, I was playing Ocarina of Time on N64, while my friends were playing the same game with better graphics on their computers, and yet today we still don't have a completely functional N64 emulator.
