    Default PS2 hidden gems...

A few years ago, there was a thread for PS1 hidden gems, which is one of my all-time favorite threads because I got into the Playstation one really late but I loved it because there were so many cheap quality games to purchase.

    http://www.digitpress.com/forum/show...ht=hidden+gems

Anyway, since the PS2 is finally coming into its prime, I thought I would start a PS2 hidden gems thread since there are so many really good games that people missed because they were under the radar.

You've got most of my personal bases covered with God Hand and the Gungrave games, but I'd like to nominate Mr. Mosquito. Really unique game that's also pretty fun. A few other nods: The Red Star and Galactic Wrestling.

Yeah, I've wanted a copy of Galactic Wrestling for a while, but I can never find a copy at Gamestop with a manual. Red Star is pretty decent but I can't get through that first level.

    Some nominations:
    Adventures of Cookie & Cream
    Adventures of Darwin
Bloodrayne (no really, the first one is good!)
Headhunter (fun near future sci fi action adventure)
Headhunter: Redemption (criminally underrated sequel. ditches most of the adventure for some solid third person action in a twisted Running Man-style world)
Kim Possible: What's the Switch? (classic 16 bit platformer fun with sexy as hell graphics)
    Kya: Dark Lineage
    MLB Power Pros
    Naval Ops: Commander
    Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift 2
    Transformers: Armada
Yakuza (why did this not do better in reviews or in the stores? The best parts of Shenmue mixed with the best parts of Spikeout? Win!)
Warship Gunner 2 (Ace Combat on fucking ships. Addictive as hell)

    Possibly include:
Culdcept (some of those games can get pretty fucking long. Ok, all of them get pretty fucking long)
Predator: Concrete Jungle (if you can adjust to the camera, it's actually quite fun)

Heard good things about and intend to play:
    Bujingai
    Dynasty Tactics
Enthusia Professional Racing (hardcore racing sim)
Heroes of Might and Magic (the remake of the first game)
    Spy Fiction
    Steambot Chronicles

Yeah, I've played many of those, and I don't know why I forgot Yakuza, Darwin and Culdcept. I'm going to have to try Kim Possible now but I don't want the cashier at the store to think I'm like one of those guys on "Dateline."

Also, for the record, I'm not a Sony fanboy but I think because of the sheer number of good games on the PS2, you really miss out if you don't have one.

The sad part? I actually own some of those games, roushimx, and I haven't even tried them before...

I'm in the same boat regarding your list, so we're even :P

I wouldn't consider myself a sony fanboy either so much as I'm attracted to the PS2 because of its massive wealth of good, cheap entertainment. There's so. fucking many. good. games.

This weekend I'm planning on hitting up Gamestop to pick up G1 Jockey 3, Asterix & Obelix Kick Buttix, and ...i don't know what else. Something for my free game. I'll probably randomly pick one of the games on your list that I haven't played and see how it turns out

edit - shit, they didn't have Asterix & Obelix anymore. Ended up getting I-Ninja instead.

Yeah, I bought Guilty Gear Accent Core, Resident Evil: Dead Aim and Mobile Gundam Seed: Neverending Tomorrow at GS earlier, although the surface of the Dead Aim disc looks like the ice rink at Rockerfeller Center.

I'd be much more selective than the OP, but one game was not mentioned so far, and that shows me how 'hidden' this 'true' gem indeed is:

Everblue 2. A wonderful game of the shamefully neglected underwater genre, great game design, great missions, the "pacing" (to use a fashionable word) is perfect, collecting and exploration (two basic important elements of game design) are at times brilliantly executed. Worthwhile having, worthwhile playing, a gem of every collection.

I'd add Star Trek: Conquest to the list. It's new last month, but it's $15 price tag (and the fact that most Star Trek games suck) will lead it into obscurity. I picked it up and I like it alot. Nothing graphically complicated, but it's a fun little strategy game.

Bard's Tale - Funny as hell, especially if you have played some of the PS2's action RPG library already. The witty humor and ability to cast creatures to fight with you save this one from being a copycat to games like Baldur Gate or Champions of Narrath.

Blood Will Tell - Awesome game that has you fighting demons to regain body parts (in the beginning of the game you can only see in black and white until you defeat the first demon and regain your eyes.) The story is above average for a hack n' slash game, and there are plently of weapons to collect (including an upgradable cannon implanted in your knee and machine gun in your arm).

The Punisher - In my top 10 PS2 games. This game is just plain great. Contains one of the greatest scenes in a video game when you pop out of a coffin at a funeral parlor and just start unloading lead into anything that moves. It also contains some great death animations like throwing a guy head first into a bear trap or holding a thug against the rhino cage to watch him get impaled.

I'll add some more when I get home from work as I can't access my entire collection list.

    From what I own:

-4x4 Evolution - Solid port of the Dreamcast version, only missing the online play as it was released pretty early in the PS2's lifespan. Think of it as a Gran Turismo for trucks and SUV's, with big open courses you can explore if you get tired of racing. Don't let the poor cover art scare you off.
-Downhill Domination - Downhill Mountain Bike racing.
    -Flipnic: Ultimate Pinball
    -I-Ninja
-The King of Route 66 - Sega's sequel to 18 Wheeler: American Pro Trucker.
    -Kya: Dark Lineage
-L.A. Rush - I thought this was a pretty solid open-ended street racer, even if it didn't live up to Need For Speed Underground 2 and Midnight Club 3, which were both released before it. Midway shouldn't have used the Rush name, though.
-The Mark of Kri and Rise of the Kasai
-NASCAR: Dirt To Daytona - One of the best NASCAR games to come along before EA bought exclusivity rights.
    -Pinball Hall of Fame
    -Pro Race Driver
    -R-Type Final
    -Road Trip and ChoroQ
-RoadKill - If you like the Twisted Metal and Vigilante 8 games, give this a try. Nice licensed soundtrack.
    -Rumble Racing
    -Scooby-Doo: Night of 100 Frights
    -Shox
    -Splashdown: Rides Gone Wild
    -Strike Force Bowling
-Test Drive Off Road: Wide Open - This game was developed by Angel Studios (now Rockstar San Diego) and uses their Smuggler's Run engine. The race courses are set in three big areas.
-Tokyo Xtreme Racer 3 - features licensed vehicles

I second Culdcept and Steambot Chronicles. Culdcept's story is horrible but the gameplay is great, and regarding Steambot Chronicles, I have no idea why it failed so miserably. It seemed like you could get used copies for like $15 just a couple of months after it came out, which is really weird for an Atlus game. Plus, it's a really good game.

Disaster Report is one of my favorite PS2 games. Very fun, original take on the survival horror genre.

Also check out Magic Pengel and Graffiti Kingdom. These two games are similar to the recent DS game Drawn to Life, and just as good.

Yeah, I agree that Everblue 2 is a unique game that I think hardly anybody played.

Like I said in the original post, I did this thread in the spirit of the previous PS1 thread, and there were actually lots of hidden gems in the original PlayStation's library of hundreds of games. I don't know the official tally on the number of PS2 games released, but out of the hundreds available, I picked games that I had played that didn't sell extremely well (hence, the exclusion of even the Jak, Sly and Ratchet platform series from the list).

A lot of these games are pretty competent games on their own, even though they're derivative of other games (e.g. Cold Fear is a pretty good RE4 rip-off and some are sequels to games that oddly didn't sell that well in the first place like V-Rally 3).

Cold Winter is a decent FPS that doesn't seem to get talked about.

It's hard to consider Cold Fear a RE4 rip off when it was in development at the same time and was released so closely to when RE4 came out.

I'm not sure how well it sold. But Wizardry is a pretty awesome RPG. I usually don't even like the series.

I need to give the game another good chance. The input delay in the control made it feel way too sluggish/imprecise when I last tried it, but maybe if I put some more time into it then I'll adjust. Really, that didn't bother me as much as the lack of subtitles for the cutscenes/cinemas
