    Default questions about PS3

I recently got a PS3 80GB and had a few questions about it? How much noise is it supposed to make while being turned on with no disc in it? I am assuming it has an internal fan. Also, I have it connected to a standard definition TV at the moment. The onscreen text in the games is extremely small and hard to read. Is this normal and is there any way to fix this besides connecting it to a high defininition TV?

The PS3 should run very quiet under any circumstances.

When its cooling units hit a certain temperature it'll kick on the heavy fans and it'll run slightly louder for a period of time, but generally it's a smooth noise either way.

If you're running the unit on a standard def TV, be sure that your video output is set up properly (don't necessarily expect the PS3 to auto detect) in the video output setting of the XMB, I believe that it will run the menus with larger graphics/text if it knows you're running it standard def/480, but not all games may accommodate that, your mileage may vary ... it's the Dead Rising "syndrome" on 360, even on my 50 inch LCD the text in that game is way too small to read.

It is not supposed to be completely silent as there is a fan running all the time, correct?

Yes. There should be a fan, but it's WHISPER quiet in comparison to other systems with cooling fans.

If you're not getting any fan/exhaust whatsoever, there's something wrong.

The new PS3's can get LOUD. 360 loud. I know that isn't what the OP bought...but it's still worth clarifying.

I noticed that whenever I use my air conditioner while using the PS3, the fans are never kicked to "overdrive", meaning it's very quiet when in use. But if I don't use the AC, the console gets very loud. Possibly, it is getting overheated whenever I don't use my AC, but when I do use my AC, it runs pretty cool.

I have the launch 60GB and there is always a quiet little hum to the system, but the fan will kick in and become louder after a few hours though. Just keep your PS3 in a well ventilated and open area, and please don't put it on the ground.

Are you talking about the slim model? My 80GB is brand new as I just bought it in September.

What do you mean by the ground? I put my systems on the floor, but with a level book under them to keep them off the bare floor.

Systems with fan-cooling systems that rest on the floor probably push a higher concentration of dust through the vents and system due to the fact that dust settles on the ground.

That is not to say that dust doesn't settle everywhere, and it's practically unavoidable unless you're living in a "clean room" where they manufacture microchips.

I only have my systems on the floor when they are hooked to the TV. I also cover them with something when not in use to avoid dust building up on them. What is the recommended height to place the PS3? Where do you have yours?

Pretty close to the floor as well. Shouldn't really be an issue if you keep it clean.

Did you ever figure out if your fans were functional?

They are functional, it wasn't that my system wasn't making any noise but I was concerned if it was making too much noise.
