Question PS2 Slim Disc Motor Fails To Spin.

I picked up a PS2 Slim from a pawn shop for $5. They said that the disc wouldn't spin, but I decided to buy it anyway and try to get it working. When I got it home I popped the top open and put a disc in, covered the 2 lid sensors and powered it on. The laser moved and looked to be trying to read the disc, but the disc itself wouldn't spin. After checking over the ribbon cables, I decided that the motor must be burned out so I jumped on ebay and ordered another motor. Fast forward to today - I got the motor in and took apart the PS2 again and installed the new motor. I powered it on with the top on and sadly it still didn't spin. I tried taking the cover off and blocking the sensors; same thing - won't spin. Does anyone have ANY idea what could be wrong with it?

It could be a problem with the lens.

That could stop it from spinning? Is there anything specific to look at on the lens to determine whether it is the lens causing the problem?

Well, I've never worked on a PS2 but I've seen that happen on a Saturn where the disc would not spin up because of a bad lens unit. In that case the lens would try to focus in and out but would not read the disc. You could try cleaning the lens for the hell of it, look for defects on the lens, and check the connections for the lens unit.

    Could be a fuse.
I fix things. You name it, I'll work on it. Want something modded? Recapped?

i've had them not spin up while trying to adjust the pots on the lens assembly, might need an adjustment or a new lens or a whole new unit.

    either way replacments are cheap:

What are pots and how do you go about adjusting them? I was looking at the lasers on that site and what are the difference between black and blue lens?

Looking on ebay there are some more differences. What are the differences between these two? The only thing I notice is that it says V12 PS2.

Pot is just short for potentiometer. It will be a small adjustment screw somewhere on the lens assembly. What I would do is look for any identifying numbers on the lens that is on your unit and see if any of them match to the ones for sale, perhaps a P/N or part number, so you can be sure to get the right one.

Well, I just bought a laser and the thing still won't spin. I bought a new disc motor and a laser and I don't know what else to try. Anything else anyone can think of? :\

EDIT: There are only two lid sensors right? One to the upper left of the disc and one near the power button?

Even without a disc the spindle should spin, the laser was probably fine, the laser moving and trying to read means that the lid switches are good, as is the track 0 switch. At this point I'd inspect the motor connector for damage and then check the surface mount fuses. Also did this unit have a mod chip, I have had to rip out malfunctioning mods before on PS1 units.
