    Default Questions about gamecube cases/shells

Nintendo makes an orange gamecube for the Japanese market... For some reason they brought over every other color they normally make but this one, seen here:

    http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ngc/color/index.html

So my question is - how would I even begin to get an orange gamecube shell to swap with the one I have? I looked all over, and no one seems to have much of any aftermarket mods for the GC - let alone a replacement shell. The only solution I see would to be to buy an entire JP gamecube and swap the shells.....

Also - are gamecube shells hard to swap?

you could use vinyl dye, although that is a more permanent solution

If you already have a gamecube, then I would suggest just buying the Japanese GC and using it as-is. You can use a boot disc to play American games on it. Then perhaps you could sell the GC you already have or trade it.

You can get the aforementioned boot-disc at lik-sang.com.

You can get a modded Japanese GC that will play both US and Japanese games, so pick up one of those in Orange/spice thats been modded, then you can sell your current GC :P

I'm in the UK and have seen a few of these on ebay.co.uk i'm not sure if they show up that often on ebay.com?

    good luck all the same..

PS. It's funny you should mention the Orange/spice GC, i have a few official GC controllers in Orange/spice , that i use with my Platinum GC! the Orange/Spice GC is a cool color for the GC, it's a shame it never made it out of Japan!

EDIT : Just spotted this as well (pic below) the japanese gamers get so many special editions, for all different games and even baseball teams... dammit!

then they have the mother of all gamecubes!

I'm gunna have to get one of these!

What is that attachment on top of the red gamecube? Some sort of dev unit? Interesting...

    Special chocolate cube Yummy.

You missed out the crystal white final fantay CC edition as well.

I had been thinking of getting a gundam red one and swapping the shells half & half to make the worlds only famicom edition gamecube.

Don't forget about the Metal Gear Solid Cube. I still need to pick one of those up.

How hard is it to swap the shells? The power buttons are the same on all cubes, but I would need to swap the front two buttons too. I assume those are loose?

As far as i remember, the power buttons & stuff are all attached to the top half of the shell.

The drive is in 1 complete unit you just unplug it from the motherboard. the hardest bit will be getting the motherboard off the bottom half of the shell.

Pulling apart a GC isn't the most difficult thing to do, but you need to be very careful and methodical in doing so. I did the "hole mod" USA/JPN switch on my US cube with zero problem. Unfortunately, it cannot be done so easily on a JPN model.

Taking one apart does make you realize what a feat of engineering the GC is. Looks so much nicer apart than the old PS2 and XBox.

Fully taking apart a GC is very easy to do...as long as you have the game bit to get the security screws out. I personally never got the pen trick to work but my friend did it easily so that part is up to you.

The mother board is just held on by a bunch of screws around the edges. The buttons are in the lid (the part you press) ... but the actual switch for the buttons are not attached to the top.

Check out my purse project if you want to see some of the insides...

The Spice coloured one actually DID come out in the UK, but they are very rare and scarce!

They were only available on launch day though, and are limited to a few hundred I believe...

Personally, i like those round lid plate things... I don't know why they didn't catch on outside of Japan... As far as I know, we only ever got the Metroid plate - Maybe Nintendo could've done a range of them as an accessory or something?

And the GameBoy Advance Player - Available in multi-colours in Japan, but only in bulk standard black over here... Bastardo!

Are you sure about that? only 2 (or was it 3?) color schemes were used for the GC launch, and spice wasn't one of them. I'm pretty sure it's exclusive to the Japanese GC only?

The easiest is to buy the JP GC and mod it to play US games or both US/JP - It is fairly easy to do.

If you decide to swap case just make sure that they are the same model (i.e. with or without the Digital AV out) because the motherboard and shell are different between the two model.
