I have had alot of the games in my collection for most of my life.
Family members would give me boxes of old games they did'nt want every so often, and I have just always had them.
We tend to take familier things for granted , especially those that bring us happiness.
Then One day I woke up in a hospital bed, with the sounds of life support systems around me. I didnt know where I was , or who all of these people standing around me were. I had had 9 seizures and a small stroke in my sleep.I had also been in a coma for a few days.
I was discovered to have a rare condition called Hereditary Coproporphyria. Interesting stuff if you like vampire and werewolf mythology.
My mind was wiped clean by a series of 9 epileptic siezures in a row .For a while I couldnt remember anything about my life. People, places,past, present, movies, music, etc.
When I could return home,began to minimalize my existance. I wanted less crap to distract me from being an artist. I probably got rid of 60% of my possessions.
Then I discovered my Video Game hoard.
I had planned to sell it, and almost gave it away once or twice.
But as I began to look through it, I was amazed to discover so much I had no idea I owned! So many games! I had no memory of ever playing them, with few exceptions. Wow, Mario 3 is all new! It was as if I had never played an NES before! Holy Cow! Look at the end bosses in Megaman 2! Where did all this blood come from in Monster Party? Why did this game suck so bad..?...the label art was cool...
And where did all of these blue and black carts come from? Hey some gold ones!
Even after watching my brother play his Xbox360, I had never been so impressed with 8-bit graphics.
Even games I had memorized like the back of my hand seemed all new to me!
Hundreds of NES, SNES, Intellivision, Atari games all over again!
It was like rediscovering my childhood.
My own collection never seemed so mysterious and full of discoveries.
What an odd feeling it is to start life over again with only the future to look forward to, and no past to look back apon.
