I've been googling this particular topic recently and have not come up with a definitive answer, alot of people say alot of things.

I was wondering what is the best way to switch discs and power off my dreamcast. MEANING: when I'm done with a disc, shutting off the power and opening the disc door while the thing is still spinning seems too violent and damaging to the system to me. Some people have mentioned that opening the disc door while the power is still on, wait til the disc stops spinning and then power off is correct. wtf? I just want to protect my system for as long a life as possible.

Thanks ahead of time for the info, much appreciated.
sorry if this sounds like an obvious/retarted question but I honestly want to know the safest way so I can keep my console longer.

manual says to open it, wait for it to stop, take it out, close it, power off. if you think that the manual is propaganda trying to selling you more dreamcasts however i sup to you, heh.

haha, thanks. I never had the manual, so completely missed/forgot to google for what the official released literature might have said. thanks!

anyone have personal experience with this? such as a DC dying out from power-up misuse?

The Dreamcast uses a mechanical brake that slows the spinning disc and brings it to a halt when you open the lid. It's designed to be done that way. Admittedly it feels a little freaky but you get used to it. I have had two DC's for about four years now and have experienced no problems with either of them related to the disc removal/power down procedure.
