found this picture today, and had honestly forgotten about it. seemed something you all might appreciate though, so here it is.

my collection has grown tremendously in the last 7 or so years, and early last year my focus shifted to PS1, due to the availability of the games on the system and my relatively small percentage of games for the system(i was sitting at about 200 when i shifted focus). anyway, the shelf i had these on was absorbed into SNES when i reorganized, so i had to find a place for my(at this point about 550) PS1 games.
i had no more wall space, so i decided id take one of the large 7.5' shelves from my basement(previously holding dups id yet to sell) and place it upright, covering the window on the back of the house. im not keen on drilling a hundred holes in my walls because i dont plan to stay in this house much longer, so i thought i would simply secure this thing in place with downward pressure from the ceiling, which works great for the rest of the shelving units in my game room. i set it up and waited about 20 minutes to make sure it would stay and it was fine, so i started the task of loading various games upon it. loose genesis, ngage, dreamcast, PS1 and virtual boy were all alphabetized and placed neatly on the shelf after a mere 2.5 hours. looked great. i was cleaning up a bit when i heard a noise behind me, and looked up in time to see 550 PS1 games get fired towards the bedroom door. turns out the width of this shelf was inadequate to support the top heaviness of the games, and, as i later realized, it was sitting on tack strip at the wall, so had been leaning a bit forward. that and i stacked 100 lbs of weight on the top of it, and expected this tall of a shelf to stay upright on the width of a cd case(its about 6" deep). stupid idea, and one where i had a dreadful feeling the whole time and kind of ignored it.
if the shelf with the sega genesis games hadnt been there, who knows what wouldve happened as the PS1 shelf fell onto me and the games, but it served to stop the shelf from falling further, and likely helped save a ton of game discs from damage.
all said and done i had to replace 51 games cases and had badly damaged three sealed games cases, but lost no games. i do still find bits of PS1 case throughout my game room, though. certainly could have ended up much worse. it could have been saturn or sega cd!
the first pic is the aftermath - theres me in the background, wondering what the hell to do now, and how im going to leave the room with the floor 1' deep in PS1 games....the bottom pic is how it looks today, with roughtly 20 screws into the wall around the window.

It's like the fall of the Roman Empire, only with more bandicoot.

I'm glad the damage was minimal.

At least the games hid the flooring from the carpet police ;)

Yeah, I'm just glad I don't have this much; I'd die via cardboard and plastic suffocation courtesy of everyone's favorite videogame heroes. Oh boy, Joe Leiberman would have fun with that LOL

But then what would we do with our free time? *GASP*! :D

I know. It's really bright outside, and I need perfect eye-hand coordination to make those jumps at the end of Metroid.

Yikes. o_o I don't know what's more shocking, the disaster or the sheer number of PS1 games.

Kinda reminds me of what my bedroom looked like years ago after a fairly large earthquake hit the Seattle area, except on a much, MUCH larger scale. My music CDs fell off my dresser and my PlayStation cases that were stacked on something else joined them into a big mixed up mess on the floor. I probably didn't have more than 20 PS1 games at the time, though.

I'm glad the shelf didn't actually fall onto you. Killed by you own collection, that would be a front page news story. Think about the media who always talk about the atrocities of video game addiction, they'd love this one ;)
The only time I got bitten by my collection is when a box full of Atari 2600 cartridges fell on my toe. When I realized this hobby of mine could be very dangerous.
More seriously, I'm glad no game perished in the fall.

That put me in the mind of the Don't Fear the Reaper skit on SNL. "I've got a fever... and the only prescription is more bandicoot!" :)

Maybe they were talking about all the negative talk about the carpet. Personaly I dont think it looks that bad. The fan on the other hand doesnt look that great. I've never cared for that wood grain ceiling fan look. More a fan of metal blades. Nothing says DONT STRETCH HERE quite like the whack of a metal fan blade on high. Specialy first thing in the morning.

Back to the subject at hand, what exactly happened that caused it to go faulty in the first place? It looks as if the bottem slid out from under it. Did the wood break? Something with the shelf?

the fan (and the same type in the other room) have been there since i bought the house, i just never cared to swap them out.

the carpet was chosen by myself! i love this carpet...its snoot restaurant carpet!

the shelf was just top heavy, and i stupidly thought i could secure it without screwing into the wall...obviously a bad idea. it just fell over top first, and this all the ps1 games piled on it fell off. the shelf is about 7.5' tall, but only about 6" deep, so wasnt all that stable to begin with. the one that fell is the blue and white one on the back wall, not the one on the left side with my NES games on it, if thats waht you were thinking.

as for the number of ps1 games, dangerboy has twice this many! at least! he has them all, with variants. truly impressive, im not quite there yet.
