View Full Version : I miss Sega...

Yeah, they're still around. Making new titles for today's generation of consoles. But something is absolutely missing here. I have spent my off time the past few days playing the Master System, the Genesis, the Saturn, and of course the Dreamcast. There is an overwhelming "Sega feel" here, something that does not seem to have been faithfully reproduced with their games on other consoles. Maybe it's just me.
I really miss Sega in the console world. I realize that statement has probably been played out to no end, but I feel I must say it yet again. I think we need Sega in our console world personally, but, I guess that is never going to happen again :(

When I played an Xbox360 for the first time (a few weeks ago, actually), I noticed that it felt a lot like I was playing a Sega console. At least, Dead Rising did, even though it's a Capcom game.

I like my Xbox and consider it an adopted Sega console (probably because I bought it *for* a Sega game).
I also don't use XBOX Live or have any type of HD setup...but thats beside the point.

Sega was pretty much in bed with microsoft during the development of the xbox1. Hell, i have a proto xbox with an arcade harness and it's full of dreamcast files (logos and artwork mostly).

I grew up with Nintendo, but when the Dreamcast came out, I became a Sega fanboy. Once I had exhausted the dreamcast, I moved on to the Xbox. After a while, however, I started wanting more Sega, so I have since been digging the depths of the Saturn and the Genesis. I freaking love my Nomad.
I still need a 32x, Sega CD, and SMS. Once I find these moderately priced (or graduate and get a job), I will possess them all.
I miss Sega, and I despise what they have become. With that said, the substantial backlog of quality Sega games is immense. I suggest setting down the Wiimote, letting the 360 stand idle (while it still works), and continue to dismiss the idea of dropping $600 on a PS3. Instead, reminisce with Sega. Crazy Taxi, Nights, Shining Force, Panzer Dragoon, Vectorman...hell, even Altered Beast all deserve to be enjoyed again.

I guess I missed the Sega boat. I really like the Genesis and played the crap out of it back in the day…for that matter I still do. When it comes to the Saturn and the Dreamcast…I just look at both as failures. I’ve tried and tried to find a reason to own a Saturn but to this day, I can only find one or possibly 2 titles worth owning.
As for the Dreamcast…I did have one, for years. I played it from time to time but again, there weren’t enough must have titles for my to justify keeping it. It seems like the import market for both the Saturn and the DC are far better than what we got over here…possibly that’s why both ultimately failed here.

NiGHTS will not be good...
Look at every other franchise that Sonic Team has turned into mediocre mashed potatoes. Sonic. Phantasy Star. Shining Force.
This can't be good.

SEGA occasionally still makes a good SEGA-like game, but they're mostly middle fo the road nowadays.
Outrun 2, SP, 2006, whatever were all good games.
Virtua Fighter 4/Evo hit the spot.
The Glitter Oasis city in Crazy Taxi 3 sucked, but the updated city from the first game was well worth the price of admission.
Sonic Rush is good, as was Sonic Advance 1. Haven't played Sonic Advance 2 and 3, though.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Sega consoles had great graphics and were among the early adopters of online capabilities for their games.
Hey, the game changes all the time. Happens every day in the business world, especially in technology. There are plenty of older games & systems to collect and play, probably more than one person could reasonably play in their lifetime at this point. There are lots of new games to enjoy as well; you just have to be willing to look for them.
Everything will be okay, just try to stay calm.

Well I understand that many Sega folks went over to the XBox, so if you have one of those you sort of have a Sega.....
I consider my Xbox a Dreamcast II, actually.
But I think the Dreamcast is really the best console ever made, and hopefully it will come back some day.....but its a pipe dream, because there really isn't room for another console.....

I always tell my friends, I haven't been so impressed with a console since the Dreamcast, but my 360 definately has a sega feel, for me at least. DC brought online gaming to my TV, and a ton of it. Lots of FPSs and sports games, a little puzzle game that comes with the system (sort of like Hexic), and Im playing these same things on my big white box.
the controller has a very DC feel to it as well.
When I first started playing Yakuza, it felt like I was playing a game on the Dreamcast. So the old Sega is still there, it's just that they're too busy whoring out Sonic, instead of bringing us quality games.

My fathers advice was stay away from Sega. He was quite the fanboy when it came to Nintendo. needless to say, I never head the Genny in its heyday, as my dad wanted the SNES. I ended up getting a Genesis several years later, and I have never looked back. I still love my SNES, although the Genesis holds its proud position right next to it. I guess my dad just never had the good games for it. Either that or he has no idea what makes games fun in the first place :)
P.S. Comix Zone!

Console wars have always been about graphics. Remember the whole "Genesis does what Nintendon't" campaign? Then the SNES was touted as having better graphics/sound than the Genesis, ad nauseam.

It appears as though Sega had their own audience, aside from the typical gamers that would play Mortal Kombat. It is almost as if they had shed new light on the gaming industry, and nobody had their eyes open.
One of my largest collections would have to be my Genesis. I play that system more than I do anything else, and not just Sonic. Sega CD was the most distinct system I had ever played, and nothing compares to it. Sonic CD has to be one of the most addicting side-scrollers I have, and I could never put it down when I picked it up.
Don't even get me started on the Saturn... (we'd be here for days on one post.)

The reason why it felt like you were playing a sega console is... Well... Look at the Dreamcast controller, and compare it to the gen 1 XBOX controller (and of course they kept the layout for the 360.) I curse Microsoft, yet I couldn't blame them. The Dreamcast had one of the coolest controller layouts, and in my opinion would be one of the best candidates for a knock-off controller.

Yeah, Sega messed up a few times over the years but they are forgiven (or should be) because the good they did outweighs the bad.
I suppose someone with a lot more knowledge on the situation would need to fill me in on this. I know Sega dropped their sports franchises but why?

I miss Sega making consoles. At least they are still making new titles for other system's. I mean I still think it's weird to be playing a Sonic title on the PS2, Gamecube or Xbox. But I would be even more sad if they wouldnt be making titles for all consoles.

I think it had to do with something about EA acquiring exclusive rights to make games with the sports teams.
I was mainly playing Nintendo games in the late 90's with the SNES. I didn't really play many games after getting an N64 as there weren't many that I liked on that system. Then I got a Dreamcast in 2001 and was back into gaming, it was the perfect system for me because I liked fighting/racing/arcade games, which were abundant on the DC. I was finished collecting DC games and got an Xbox for cheap, and it kind of feels like a Dreamcast 2 with sequels of DC titles and the emphasis on action/arcade games.

SEGA made some of my favorite arcades ever, particularly Daytona USA and Indy 500. The only system I cared for by Sega was the Genesis. Everybody had it at one point, it was almost as popular as the NES. However, like most people, I gave up on the Genesis, sold it to a friend in 1995, and gave my games to my younger cousin. After about a 3 year period, I had gone back to Nintendo with the SNES. I had both at the same time, but the Genesis always seemed to be behind the SNES in variety of games (not including RPGs, which I loathe). There were quite a few early Genesis games I loved, but by around 1994 and the Genesis 2 all the new good games were on the SNES or at least both. I also thought the Game Gear was very cool and lightyears better than the Gameboy. The 32X, Sega CD, Sega CDX, Nomad, and Saturn were each extremely over priced failures, which Sega would drop support on after a few months. By the time the Dreamcast came around, I had no faith in Sega's support of their product at all. I remember people raving about it, but I wasn't interested. Since then, I haven't seen much coming from Sega that impresses me. I don't really miss them, although I plan on buying a Genesis again and reacquiring the games I once had.

I really should get an XBOX and a 360, just for all the MS and Sega games alone, but I simply can't afford to buy anymore new consoles to collect for that have more than just a few games that I want... I could afford to get a new handheld like the DS, but I just can't do the console whore bit anymore...
I agree that for the most part all the new Sonic games since the Dreamcast games are little more than shovelware aimed at orphaned Sega fanboys, but the GBA games are very well done and the DS game looks pretty good too...
I really love my GBA and all the Sega games I have for it... the Sonic games on GBA feel very much like the glorious Sega of old to me, even if they are on a Nintendo system... I think of my GBA SP2 as more of a GG2 than anything else... and I would think of it like that even more so if I had a GBA... I do want to get one, just so I can have it... I'd prolly never play anything on it except Pinball Tycoon though, and even then only because that game uses the L & R buttons for the flippers, and you can't change the control scheme, and the L & R buttons on the SP2 are just too uncomfortable to play well...
but never say never... it wasn't that long ago that no one expected Sega to ever get out of the console business, so I wouldn't say that they will never get back into it... when the time is right for it, they'll be back with something!

Wow…you basically nailed my thought to a “T”. Except for the RPG aspect. I think it boiled down to what you were used to. I started with Mario on the NES so titles like Sonic seemed empty to me. Not saying that it is, just when compared to Mario on the SNES, it’s so different. I was also playing titles like Castlevania IV, F Zero, Final Fantasy II, Street Fighter II and Zelda LttP within a year of the SNES launch and at the time, the Genesis had nothing like them. I borrowed my buddy’s Genesis and played the crap out of Phantasy Star II but when compared to Final Fantasy II, they are apples and oranges.
I guess it was just a matter of what you were used to, I learned to game on a NES so figuring that the SNES had many of the NES sequels, I went with that console.
As for the Sega CD, 32X, Saturn and Dreamcast…they were all commercial failures. I’m not saying they sucked, (ok, the 32X downright sucked) they were just commercial failures. Hell, the Dreamcast only saw a 19-month life span…to me that’s a failure. Especially with them being put on clearance in stores less than 2 years after launch…that’s sad.
Personally, I miss the Sega-vs-Nintendo days. It was a better time for gaming in general.

Yeah boys I miss the "old" SEGA, which is why I'm more or less stuck in the 16-Bit Mega Drive and 32-Bit SATURN days still. I realize they made a majorly bad ass system with the Dreamcast, but personally I still prefer the SATURN as (a bit of blasphemy here for me since I'm die-hard Mega Drive) the best system they ever made. Outside of Jet Set Radio and a few titles here or there from the DC onward to the scattering of titles today though... to me it's just not the same.
Me and the old SEGA are still chewing bubblegum and kicking ass on a semi regular basis... in all our CRT Standard AV hookup glory. No HDTV for me, and beside Ryu Ga Gotoku and the ability to publish titles like the Hokuto No Ken VS. Fighting game... the new SEGA can suck my balls.
