I can't wait to tackle DQ5. DQ4 was a well done remake, and they balanced it so that grinding was unnecessary. I played to the third chapter in DQ5 using the Partial Translations/ Dejap patch, but I got stuck needing to grind a while (the mosters you get earlier in the game are too weak, and you have to level up the ones you aquire, not to mention some of the human charters, but I am not giving anything away). However, Star Ocean is coming out soon, and I may decide to play that instead.

I'm not trying to derail the thread, but what is the best remake of the original Dragon Quest?

Probably the super famicom DQ I and II. If you decide to play the fan translation though, I had some weird buggy issues with II that took some emulator switches and cheating to get around.

The GBC version of DQ1 and 2 gave you twice as much GP and EXP per battle. I don't know if the SNES version does that, but if not, that alone makes the GBC version worth playing because the first game in the series is a piece of crap compared to most RPGs(and this is actually coming from someone which the original Dragon Warrior was his first ever RPG, which back then I did actually like the game.)

oh and the loading times would kill you in the meantime(battles are frequent), I already played chrono trigger and final fantasy IV,V,VI on psx - never again, (after I finished them on snes),
playing them without loading times is just the way they were meant to be played.

Very true. Final Fantasy I and II look gorgeous on the PSP, but the load times are a real put-off. I'll stick with the DS.

Final Fantasy 4 actually had the same load times the SNES version had. With Final Fantasy 5 and 6 they tried to keep it like the newer games did, by having that swirling effect before entering battle. So yeah. It was just bad design on Squaresoft's part.

It doesn't necessarily mean there will be long load times because the game has is disc and not cartridge. Take a look at Brave Story for the PSP. The game has minimal load times and some of the best graphics on the system. The PS2 game Rogue Galaxy has almost no load times throughout the game and the graphics are also some of the best on the system. The Star Ocean remake and SO2 rerelease on the PSP have less than a second load time when entering areas though battles have about three seconds load times(not too bad, considering the load times on DQ4 DS has atleast a full second for entering areas has about two seconds during battles.)

However. Given the format, disc games usually do have load times.

Anyways. If Dragon Quest 4, 5, and 6 were put on the PSP, they'd also probably look like the PS2 version of 5 rather than the PSX version of 4. So you would gain a second or two extra in load time per battle while you'd make out with better graphics. Dependent on who you are it'd be worth it. I'd rather have a compilation of all three on the PSP with PSX quality graphics though, meaning if it's developed well the load times if more would be no more than a second extra(since all three games are probably being created on the same engine.)

That's a neat idea, but I'd like to have an actual cartridge though.

That's all I needed to hear. I don't mind grinding but I played the original NES version (never beat it) and it was grind-city.

Be prepared to pay for it if you want it complete. I just got it earlier in the month and it was pretty expensive, for a relatively common GBC game anyway. Plus they retain some of the old school annoyances not found on the recent DS remakes. Like every time you heal someone it takes you back to the main menu and you have to do magic>heal>hero again. Plus the walking speed is like the originals, so again if you're use to the DS remakes it kind of sucks.

But overall I'd recommend this version. Even with the stupid stuff I'm still really enjoying them.

Yeah and Doom is a piece of crap compared to most FPS, right?

Let me guess. You're one of those people who praise the game to this day because it was amazing BACK WHEN IT WAS THE ONLY RPG OUT. The original game is not only one of the worst RPGs created, but one of the worst on the system it was created on.

Like I said in that last post. It was my first RPG and I loved it for the longest time. Then I came to my senses. "You know, why am I even playing these pos grindfest again." Yes Dragon Warrior is what made console RPGs what they are today, but that doesn't make it a great game. Being the first ever of a genre does not make it the best. Yes, it's got nice music, the world itself is nice, enemy design is the best in any RPG, but that's where it ends as the gameplay is terrible and it takes 99.99999999999999% of the games time.

The only good thing about the original Dragon Warrior nowdays is how much they actually catered to the fans of the original in the second half of Dragon Warrior 3. Back when I first beat Dragon Warrior 3 it was much more amazing because you never knew it was a prequel to the original title. It was so awesome actually finding the world of the original Dragon Warrior on the third title but slightly changed because some things haven't happened yet. Because the world of the original Dragon Warrior is well designed and only the gameplay sucks, I have no problem getting nostalgic over the games world.

I haven't bought DQ5 yet, but borrowed it from a friend (who in turn borrowed my copy of DQ4). I really like it, but I'm at a spot that requires grinding (probably the same area that Evan was talking about, around level 20). My character is currently at level 20 and I don't see much difference from level 17...

I couldn't do that. I hate borrowing RPGs that don't save to a separate memory card, because when you eventually buy them your characters are gone.

I'm guessing it's on hold in Japan until awhile after 9 comes out. 9 is coming in the summer, supposedly.

The Dragon Quest 6 DS trailer looks pretty awesome.

I don't think I'll wait to pick up Dragon Quest 6. When Dragon Quest 5 went out of print, the only way to get it was to purchase it off Ebay(none of the Gamestops around me, atleast outside an hour radius had it new.) I had to purchase it on Ebay, but I got DQ5 new, non bootleg thankfully. However, I don't really like purchasing cartridge games on Ebay once I purchased one that happened to be a bootleg. Showed a picture of the front cover of the box, described as "new," so I purchased it.

You can still get it from Square

When is DQ 6 suppose to come out?

I think DQ 6 is still TBA and DQ 9 is yet to be announced (although I'd be surprised if it didn't come out).

I dunno what's taking Square Enix so long, you'd think the European localization of DQ 6 would be ready by now...

DQ4 already had a PSX remake which the DS game is based off. Heartbeat disbanded long ago and the coding was supposedly too hard to do when DQ4 PSX was going to get released to the US(which is why we didn't get the game advertised on the back of Dragon Warrior 7.)

DQ4 may have just been done from scratch but the PSX game used as a template. DQ5 had a PS2 remake, so make that from scratch as well using the DQ4 graphics and using the PS2 game as a template. With DQ6, there has been no 3d remake so they had nothing to go off in what it should look like in 3d.

No idea if this is correct. Just a guess.

Haven't played it(the DS version atleast,) so I can't tell you. It probably is. Besides, even if you pick it up and don't play it, it probably won't drop in price since it's out of print.

One game this generation that's rare and you could say is actually good.

DQ5 is definitely worth a playthrough. The storyline is awesome, and it really did introduce the whole concept of monster collecting. It took me about 30 hours for the full playthrough, but I didn't bother to tackle the bonus dungeon. Also, I would forgo playing the SNES version, as it is dreadfully slow going compared to the DS version, and the DS version allows you to have four characters on your party, making life a ton easier.

I've been putting quite a few hours into DQ5 the past month. I'm about 25 hours in and really enjoying it (probably about 75-80% done with the main quest). Considering the retail failure and rather fast OOP status of the game, I was thinking Square-Enix might possibly cancel the next one (unlikely). I know one thing though, I'm buying DQ6 on day one. No waiting for it to go OOP this time.

I only played the first DQ recently, and I loved the game. It is NOT horrible or even slightly bad, and most of it is certainly NOT grindy. There was maybe one or two spots where I had to do a bit of leveling, but nothing too drastic at all. The best thing about the original is how non-linear it is. I always got the feeling I could go anywhere I wanted so long as I could hold my own against the enemies. No "the bridge is out until the architect shows up," no "I can't go here yet, I should come back later" messages, NONE of the BS that so many other RPGs use to keep you from advancing to a place you shouldn't be at. It means if you can figure out how to kill the dragon early, you can save the princess early. If you want to hardcore level grind, you can go to places earlier than you're meant to. It really makes the world feel a lot more open than most other RPGs. It's far from the WORST RPG on the NES. HAVE YOU PLAYED HYDLIDE? How about Swords & Serpents? Heck, I liked the original DQ better than the sequel, and better than some of the other RPGs that I love on the system (like Ghost Lion, Faria or Magic of Scheherezade).

Anyway, as for the DS games, I'm still playing DQIV, but thankfully I have the fifth one sitting there waiting for me. I had to start over on DQIV tho b/c I lost my DS on the bus. :( Can't wait for DQVI, and Squeenix better not cancel it!

At least Dragon Quest V for DS hasn't really jumped up in price like Suikoden II and Valyrie Profile for the PS1. The only thing is that it seems to be sold at the same retail value rather than going down in price like most DS games would.

Dragon Quest 6 does look like a better game when it comes to graphics on the original system though. I'd really like to see how good it would play on the DS.

I like it when they keep remaking these games for the newer systems, but DQ6 is even more important because it hasn't been outside Japan yet. The fact that many Japanese games that are main parts of series don't get released here makes me disappointed. Heh remember AVGN's rant on how the only good Godzilla game back in the day was in Japan.

I really wish they would release games 1-3. Yes, they are available for Gameboy Color, but they look like crap. It would be a non-issue if I didn't know that superior SNES ports existed.

This would be nice. It would make a good 1-3 collection, or 1+2 and 3 separate like they usually do. Plus since they are so inter-related, the mapping work would be cut down somewhat substantially by doing them together, same for monsters, item artwork etc.

3 with the DS style graphics and additions would be excellent as hell.

I know I was hoping to see the first 3 show up on the Virtual Console in the weeks leading up to IV's release on the DS (I think Nintendo did something similar when counting down to the release of the Wii Metroid... released the older games on the VC). Maybe with Final Fantasy showing up, DQ/DW isn't too far behind.

As for a superior port, I'm fairly certain there's a remake of DQIII on the SNES, but not in NA.

I've just recently started up DQ 4 after picking up DQ 5. I forgot how much I was enjoying DQ 4, I just got distracted with other games. I really want to move on to 5 so I'm pushing through the last bit of 4 that I've got to play.

This will be out about a year after the JP version, and exactly almost 2 years after 5.

Why isn't it on a Sunday? Nintendo usually releases on a Sunday. The audience for this game won't have any plans for valentine's day

The audience for this game won't have any plans for valentine's day

So you think that only single, can't-get-a-date people will be interested in playing DQ6? Consider all the DP members who are in a relationship (married or otherwise)... It can actually be a sweet Valentine gift and it only takes a few minutes to go buy it (if a store is nearby). And getting it on release day doesn't mean that there won't be any Valentine's Day celebration...

My impressions are that it's great, I'm only like 2 hours into it and loving it. I can actually get into this one rather than V

Also if you preordered at Gamestop in the USA you get a collectable Slime plush!!! Which is so worth it. I'm still waiting for the plush though. They shipped it seperately than the game because they ran out of them but they did ship it.
