I've always wondered what other people have seen in regards to people who really dont know the value/worth of a classic system. I see crazy asking prices all the time.
Post yours up. Craigslist, fixed price ebay auctions, etc.
Here's one from craigslist in Hawaii:

Collecovision with Donkey Kong, I'm pretty sure it's not worth $200.

There's a dude at the flea market who sells Yobos for 55 bucks and broken NES's for 25 (he says: "they're not broken, if you wiggle them around enough the light will stop flashing..."). There was a lady selling loose Sonic games for the Genesis at 10 dollars a pop before. I tried talking her down to 3, but to no avail.

That's nothing, place by me wants $75 for an NES and $135 for a Virtual Boy. No warranties, you're not allowed to test them in the store.

Actually it's a CALECO VISION....sounds like it might be rare enough to be worth $200 lol

Pricing strategy im guessing. You know there's one born every minute and they only need to sell it to one person
reality usually sets in when no one buys it for weeks . Unless they're really that unreasonable.

A few months ago, I saw an N64, "as-is" with no hookups or jumper pak for $14.99 at a Goodwill.

I found an Atari 7800 in a thrift a few months ago for $80. It was bundled with two Atari 2600 joysticks, and around a dozen games, most were 2600 commons. It also had six totally random power supplies taped to it, along with the original 7800 one. I already have three or four 7800s at home, all of which were bought for less than $10, so I naturally passed. I visited a week later, and it had been sold!

I saw an Atari 5200, being sold as-is, for around $80 at Goodwill in late-2006. That was packaged with some very common 5200 titles (i.e. versions of stuff already released on 2600, such as Pac Man and Centipede, etc.). Funny thing is that it lasted all of a day in the display case. Some dude bought it or an older lady, I guess.

I used to keep a list of all the sellers who tried selling Mario/Duck Hunt carts on ebay for more than $10 + shipping. The list grew too long, so I stopped adding to it.

My local pawn has DOZENS of loose n64s sitting around, and they expect 30 dollars each! They also wanted to charge me 99 dollars for a jaguar.

I remember seeing a Marvel vs Capcom 2 at goodwill for like $80 BUT it was a burnt disc in a jewel case that just said "Marvel vs Capcom 2 - PS2, Jeremy" I was pretty shocked on that one.

My local game store is a notorious overpricer run by a pompous git who believes that a Mario/Duck Hunt is worth all of a good $15. Other shining examples of idiocy:
NES Front Loader - $45
Sega Genesis - $35
SNES - $60
Final Fantasy for NES - $25
Zelda for NES - $15
Super Mario RPG (w/ dead save battery and ripped label) - $35
Gunstar Heroes for Genesis - $25
Any of the systems at the top come with an uber common game (usually Mario/Duck Hunt for NES, Sonic 2 for Genny, and Super Mario World for SNES).
However, I have found some good deals there before (mainly when another guy ran the place). A 3DO with around 6 or 7 games for $50, An Odyssey2 with 6 games for $10 (they were tired of looking at it gather dust for $50), Mars Matrix for $7, Bubble Bobble 2 for $10, etc.

Actually, some of those prices don't look half bad, depending on the condition. I know certain gamestores here on the east coast sell NES and SNES systems for around those prices and can't keep them in stock!!!

yeah, I've sold about 80 frontloaders for around $45 each, and they sell every time. Sometimes I even list them for $50 just to see what happens, and they still go. I can usually sell SNES systems with smw for $55 as well.

There was a guy at this store that had common 3DO games for $60 to $80 bucks a pop. I had my eye on them for a year. He didnt sell a single one, I finally tried to talk him down on the prices and he got all pissy and said the prices are firm, take it or leave it. I said I think you don't really want to sell them, you just want to show them off. He shrugged his shoulders and said Thats my price.
Speaking of 3DO, a friend of mine went to a Salvation Army, they had a 3DO for $400, this was about two years ago. She said when she was in the store she saw it and said "Oh look a 3DO.....for $400???", the lady behind the counter said its not a 3DO its a "Panasonic REAL". My friend said its the same thing, the lady said "no, you are thinking about a Playstation."
My friend realized this conversation was going nowhere and said, well, whatever you want to call it, its $350 too expensive.

Some examples I've seen (Including some swag. All at different places over the years):
- PlayStation (Late-edition PSX): $50 (At the time, you could still get them at Gamestop for $20)
- Sega Genesis (Model 2): $100 (Same price as their Xbox)
- Madden 200X (Can't remember what one exactly. PC version): $30
- Super Mario 64 110 Camera: $90 :eek 2:

One of the thrift stores near my home always has insane prices for their game systems. For instance they wanted $89.99 for a loose Sega Game Gear and if that wasn’t enough they wrote the price with black marker right on the screen. Another time I stopped by there they wanted $89.99 for an Atari 2600, needless to say nobody was rushing to buy them.

Model 2 Genesis, RF, Power and 3 button pad... $39.99 That's the worst sitting on shelves at my local hunting grounds. Same store has a GBA Micro for 79.99. Tried to talk em down but, they couldn't go cheap enough as they paid $35 cash for it. Also have the same 20 SMB/DH carts they've accumulated over the last 4 years or so. All priced $4.99. What's sad is I got a nice copy of Lolo 3 from this store for $3. O_O
Wanted to buy an extra Super Metroid they had one time. Asked for it to be pulled and it was marked $3.99. Told them I'd take it... they pulled some shit on me that day. I get the whole "Someone marked it wrong" spiel and was told that it costs $15. A fair price, unfairly amended so I refused. Also mentioned something about "bait and switch" and deceptive business practices before I left. :) After that they thought I was a stinking eBay vulture. That goaded them into taking the items I look at and throwing them on eBay. They listed Super Metroid and got $13 and $3 shipping for it. Now they know better. Auctions rarely yield a customer that buys weekly. We are back on friendly terms and they've been giving me some deals here and there as a form of apology. Would like to get a spoken one as well but, I'll take the discounts without a grudge. Especially since they let me trade them a bunch of crap games in for SMT: Nocturne and Digital Devil Saga this last week. :D
In the past I've seen some bad stuff. Mostly at fleas. N64 sports games for $15, complete common N64 games starting at $50 and up to $70. Pirate GBA games with bad repro boxes and manuals for $30. Loose Genny carts for $10 - again nothing good. Seems that Dreamcast stuff hasn't been hit by all the classic sticker shock yet. Most DC I find is almost always underpriced. I think it's because it's stuck in the middle of the overpriced old stuff and the higher valued new stuff.

Last Monday I saw some guy with a Dual Shock Playstation for sale. It was boxed and complete, included two memory cards and a bunch of sports games. He wanted $60 and wouldn't break up the set. The box was mint but the system looked very beat up.
There's vendors here that sell NES Frontloaders - the system only, no cables - for $30. And they wonder why they end up junked...

I've gone to a classic gaming store that has high prices on almost everything. They were asking $100 for an atari 2600 with maybe 12 common games. Every once in a while they have fair prices, but you can tell they are losing thier shirts over there cuz they all act like they don't want to be working there and are all grumpy every time I go there. They had a copy of Texas Chainsaw Massacre for the 2600 and they want something like $250 for it. They know its rare but I wouldn't even begin to try to tell them what the actual value really is.

DAMMIT!! DAMMIT!! DAMMIT!!
I saw my first 5200 in the wild since 1984, I was about to pounce on it, and the guy wants 80 bucks for it. $10 a piece for games. And it only comes with one controller, which looks like pretty much any original 5200 controllers left over from way back - shot to hell....

One of my customers has been bugging me for an NES Bubble Bobble for a couple weeks now... I finally got one in and sold it to her for $25 (a fair price), then she proceeded to tell me how another local store (I won't say which one, they're all bad) had a copy and when she asked how much it was, they quoted her "$100 loose". We had a good laugh over that one.
Then there's another store that has a wall of "display only" items that are "super rare" including a loose copy of Zelda 1 for NES, which they refused to sell to anyone as "it is very hard to find". The same week I heard that, another dealer wholesaled me 10 of them... which I pulled out to show him and more laughing was had.
The market for old games (in general) is devaluing, but the number of dealers has increased and they keep trying to ask high prices because they see other dealers "getting that much", but there's a difference between pricing to sell and pricing to display. It's all well and good that someone can "sell" a Game Gear for $80, but if it's still there years later are they really selling it?

I've mentioned this one before in another thread but there's this one Pawn Shop in my town that used to have good deals on Genesis/NES games such as $5 for Donkey Kong Classics, Zelda, Zelda II, etc - it was hit or miss 'cause all NES games were $5 across the board - so I picked out the good ones. Since then, a new 20 year old or so kid is pricing the games now and I was suprised to see stacks and stacks of games but then I noticed the prices: $15 for Sonic 2 loose, $25 for Zelda and Zelda II loose, $10-15 on the rest of the NES games...what a joke! I stop in from time to time to see if they get any systems in but those games aren't going anywhere!

I've seen an original loose PS1 at the Goodwill near me for $49.99.
As for games, on the way to Midwest Gaming Classic we stopped off at a Goodwill just over the boarder into Wisconsin. Nicest architecture I've seen on a Goodwill, but their prices were nuts. They had common Xbox sports titles for $14.99. Everything else they had was over priced too, guess they had to pay for the building's design somehow.
Locally, there is a used music shop that also sells games. Their prices are odd to say the least. Once they had two complete copies of CyberTiger for PS1. One marked $18.99, the other $1.99. Tiger Woods 2001 they have for $21.99. Oddworld they now sell at $12.99, three copies they have now. It's weird because at the same place I got Silent Hill for $4, and a boxed Little Samson for $10.

It's those oddball places I love, not because it's a good chuckle to scope prices but sometimes they just don't know what's up and price a good game low.
I currently don't have any epical pricing stories to tell but I might post about some earlier adventures if they come to mind (I generally forget stupid priced stuff).

I don't how those stores can afford their rent by sitting on classic items at those prices? You wonder if they really have any concept of what the items are worth? My father and I were in the baseball/sports card collecting business for a dozen years, and often we'd visit the local shops wherever we went. We often had a laugh at the prices on stuff these people were selling. Now sports card trading has, and I guess still does, a major price guide published by "Dr." James Beckett. Beckett guides were nothing more than his and other insiders to openly manipulate the market to their advantage. I am still shocked they were never investigated for fraud. They would price newly issued cards up through the roof for several months, cards which they had bought tons of at wholesale cost. Then after 6 months, they'd drop the prices back down into the gutter. There was no reason any regular card would be worth so much, when it had 2 million copies printed.

Salvation army.. $10 xbox games like Sega GT 2002/JSRf..
Goodwill... 3 copies of some NFL game for the saturn.. $8 each...
Mario kart double dash USED, $30 at EBGames (It goes for $30 new!)
A nintendo 64 for $150, Back in 2004 or 2005..
Some sega game gear games for $15 each, Oddly enough they sold..
Some common atari 2600 games for $5 each, Sheesh..
An atari 2600 with some games for $100..
And there is one garbage store in butler, PA that has stuff through the roof. I saw one SNES for $15 and it was as yellow as a lemon, And the plastic was coming apart in thr front... It's probably still there if you want it. *Sarcasam*

I've seen some goofy ones. $80 for an Intellivision or 2600 (at least they came with some games, but they were pretty common ones). The funny thing is that I usually see horrible console prices, but pretty reasonable game prices. I'm guessing it's just because the consoles take up more space (yet they would move them faster if they were cheaper...).
Others: $75 for a toploading Sega CD, for $99 for a frontloader. $75 for a 32x. $75 for a Saturn. Then, strangely, that same store had a Master System for $35. Go figure.
Once of the worst I've ever seen, though, was at a flea market. I found a guy with a box full of about 25 NES games. There were a couple I wanted at the time (I only remember Xevious), but when I asked him how much, he said $40. "For all of them?" "No. Each." "o.O"
What really gets me is that he had about 4 copies of SMB/Duck Hunt in there...for $40 each. I later found Xevious for $3 at one of my overpriced local stores.

So that's where my SNES went off to... Yes, I want it back. I'd like to bash the f***er that sold me that thing over the head with it!
Dude, that just sucks... Outrageous pricing just makes me depressed. It's like, it's just going to sit there until the store shuts down because some jack-ass is too greedy to sell it for a reasonable price, expecially pawn shops.
Goodwill is full of incompetence. They like to price everything for what they think it is worth. A DreamCast, no cables: $30, the controller (yes, sold seperately): $9. Yet, the same one sold me Diablo 2 for $4. Not a scratch on it. Ha,ha! Yes! Ignorance: sometimes it works in your favor.

My local flea market has various people selling older games... not video game "dealers", just flea market vendors who sell this stuff casually every Sunday. Usually some good deals-- one guy sells all his old games for $5 so I've picked up stuff like Silent Hill (PS1), Night Trap (32X/CD), and Contra (NES) all at very reasonable prices. But a very old woman there also has some older stuff... like boxed Genesis and Master system commons for $10+, but even worse, loose Atari 2600 commons for $15. Yes, as if suffering through Pac-Man on the 2600 isn't bad enough, try paying $15 for it and then playing it.
I think a large part of the problem is the perception in non-gamers minds that this old stuff is worth a ton. As gamers we are quite aware of what this stuff is worth-- we know that most games are worth next to nothing, but there are some gems that make all the searching and digging worth it. Certainly some common person can't tell the difference between Panzer Dragoon and Panzer Dragoon Saga in a stack of Saturn games. So I think it is a result of misconceptions from non-gamers, moreso than it is people intentionally marking things at ridiculous prices. Naturally, some old lady at a flea market is gonna think... "Oh my gosh, an old Atari system and a Pac Man game! These must be worth a fortune!" But the funniest thing to me is when those ridiculously overpriced items actually sell. Because you know it's not a gamer who overspent on that crap-- it's some dumb eBay vulture who's also probably thinking... "Oh my gosh, an old Atari system and a Pac Man game! These must be worth a fortune!"

Man some of these stories are just brutal. I've seen plenty of bad ones on craigslist. The funny thing I find is that even 3 months later, you see the exact same posts, no price reduction. Like seriously... get a clue.
I remember seeing a "brand new NES" selling for $150 plus maybe 5 games. He said he bought it in the box about a year prior, and it was "so new, the controllers still had a clicky sound when you pressed them". I told him that one could buy a system for anywhere from $5-$20. And then he tried to sell it to *me* at $150. I showed him the e-door.
I went to a flea market a few months ago. Common Atari 2600 for $5. But I made my way to the exit when I saw Dragon Warrior for $35. Never been back.
Just went to a pawn shop last week, and although they were better, $15 minimum for NES games wasn't happening. The lady said these are now "collector's items". I decided to avoid telling her that I can get the same games for $5 on a bad day.

The only person that used to really bug me was a local flea market vendor selling burned games. This was a few years back when Dreamcast games were new and still selling. He would sell self booting dreamcast burns with fake labels and try to pass them off as legitimate games. It sucked because people would try to trade them in at my store and I would always have to try and explain why the game they bought for $40 from that slimy seller was worthless.

The absolute worst I ever saw was a couple of years back at a pawn shop in a small town south of here. Ironically I got one of my best deals there at the same time, to wit: a Sears Video Arcade II along with a pair of working wireless 2600 joysticks all for $30. Pretty good right? But then the owner of the pawn shop smelled blood in the water and after I had already paid for these items tried to get me to buy a big stack of loose R1 2600 carts which he suddenly decided were worth $10 each. I said LOL and walked out with my new "he-shouldn't-have-priced-them-so-cheap" goodies.

Interesting. Out of the several locations they have here this is what they are currently at:
NES - $50, SNES - $40, Genesis - $20, Dreamcast - $20
And generally they come with 2 controllers and 1-5 common games.
About 1-2 years ago I was seeing:
NES - $70, SNES - $50, Genesis - $15, Dreamcast - $20
With also those controllers and games. there are a few CCs that charge $5-20 more than the rest on consoles but sometimes you'll find their games to be $1 when another place is $5-10. There's a sweet one nearest to me that sells XBOX/PS2 games for $3 complete and that's where most of my PS2 stuff came from. Right now they have a huge stack of PSX titles for $1 a pop, a lot I don't own but they look unappealing ATM.

There's some nard on Ebay who hoards TG-16's, Duo's, and Duo-R's and flips them with BIN's at about $500 + a pop.
Makes me sick everytime I see that shit.Ah . . . is that why I can never find one listed for reasonable? (fellow Houston gamer here, by the way)

The one I'm talking about USED to have nes games at about 99 cents to 3.99, snes games were 1.99, ps1 games were 3-7 dollars. Last time I was there they wanted 19.99 for mega man X and 24.99 for mega man 7. Mega man 2 which used to be 2.99 is now about 9.99.
I never went back again.

Actually, one of the Cash Converts is doing that now, but not one of the really close locations. They may be trying it out to see if it's successful but their stuff is still just sitting there.

A few years ago, I met this kid that said he wanted a Super Nintendo. I told him that I just happened to have one that I was selling. It was in good condition, had all the proper cables, controller in good condition, and the SNES manual but NO box. I told him I'd sell him the SNES for $120 and toss in three games. He actually GLADLY paid the $120 dollars....Man I'm an assshole.....

There's a store near me that bought out a whole bunch of Telegames stock after a tornado damaged their warehouse years back. For a short while they had plenty of classic games. By the end, all the store had left were copies of Qix for the Atari Lynx, all priced what the other boxed games were, $1.99. The day before OVGE 2005, I went into the store to pick up a few copies to hand out, since there were plans for a lot of people to bring their Lynxes so we could have some multiplayer fun. When I got to the store, one of the employees was marking them up to $9.99. Does that make any sense? If they didn't sell at two bucks, what makes them think they'll move at ten? As a consequence, I don't believe they've sold too many since then. They still have a boxload or two.

Well it wasn't consoles, but a year ago when I took a trip to the Twin Cities, a vendor in the Roseville Mall was selling games in a kiosk in the middle of the mall. He had a good selection of some uncommon games, but everything was ridiculous. I remember seeing a loose Mario 64 in FAIR condition with a $40 price tag on it. NES games ranged between $7 (for commons) up to $50 for uncommons. He had some common PSX RPG's that I was interested in, but of course there was nothing under $35. I haven't been back to the mall yet this year, but I can't imagine with those prices that he would have stayed in business very long.
On a side note, I haven't bought anything from a major game retailer in a long time, but the practice of taking $5-$10 off the retail price for a used current-gen game has always burned my ass.

Actually, this guy is new to me! Hah, I do believe I was referring to that Bullseye seller.
This new guy though, WTF? It's this kind of price gouging that has made it difficult for me to get a TG-16 or a DUO.
Bullseyes was a jerk chargeing more then what the game was worth.
Not to mention he listed in his store what, he didn't have and other crap.
Man i hated that seller so much.
I never bought from him but i seen every body.. that has a story about him being ripped off.
These days though you have sellers copying him now wich is rather sick.

That kind of thing is the reason my Turbografx only has 5 games and no CD attachment.
It is i'm set with a duo-r and corgarfx+ scdr2 all ready.
Still it's just a matter of being patince.. for when the right deal comes along for pce&tg16 games these days.
I'm just glad if the u.s version of a game is too expensive.. i just buy the jpn version then.
Like just a while ago i pickup the pce version of, Bomberman93 for at the buyitnow price of ($9.99) on ebay.
Wich is much cheaper for me then "what the tg16 version go's for :p

I visted alot of price jacking Cash Convertors here in Australia but this new one in a up and coming suburb took the cake.
They wanted:
$35 AUS (30 US) for a Loose copy of Super Metroid.
$50 AUS (44 US) for an extremely battered ex-rental complete copy of SNES Street Fighter 2, just the standard, not turbo.
A Killer Instinct SNES bundle, the one with the game and CD for, wait for it......
$200 AUS (185 US)! No thanks
A bunch of GB games for $25+ AUS (21 US) Most commons.
What takes the cake is when I talked to the manager about it he said "It's not a damn auction house, take it or leave it"
Needless to say I don't go THERE any more :D

Local shop here in Austin wants $100 for each of the three or four Final Fantasy VII's they've got, GH or non-. The kids working there (20-somethings) seemed to think that was a good price. Scaaaary.

Now those are the ones that really piss me off. I don't care how much a seller asks for his stuff, if it's to high I just don't buy. But a$$holes like this selling burned games really bothers me.

I have one a bit worse...I once sold a guy an NES and about ten games for $200. He also wanted super mario bros. so bad that he paid me $30 for it after I told him it would be hard to find. He paid for it without hesitation. This deal landed me a $150 profit...

I want a Japanese DUO. Regular is fine, as are R and RX. Never really seen big differences, minus the 6 button included with the RX. That way, I can play all the CD games and the Japanese Hu-Cards without an adapter. Only thing I might need is the Arcade Card, and that's only if I bought a game that needed it.
And I have found some good deals before: Neutopia for $3, in brand new condition. I still haven't beaten it, because I always lose the pass words. I'll start again eventually, but I'll lose it again and need to restart. And I'll put it off for another 2 years. And so on an so forth.

The goodwill in Kenosha WI. has a whole stack of UMD movies at 19.99 each, It makes me laugh because most game stores tell me that they are tired of UMDs sitting around their store and not selling new at 19.99. Another Goodwill had a boxed TG16, one controller and the cables no games and the rear port cover is missing, 49.99. I asked the employee if they are basing everything off of Ebay now and he's like "yeah", I said they you can get a nice one in good shape on Ebay for that price but this one is in bad shape and missing parts and not worth it and he agreed. He said unfortunately I can't price anything and can't change it. It's pretty bad when their own employees think their stuff is overpriced!

$200 for a console that fetches (at most) $30, plus 10 games...

I've seen that stuff too. There's a barn sale near me every year (for those who don't know.. a local chruch sells off all the items they have collected over the year to raise money) I'm not religious but I go there for the deals. Here's what I have found
NES: 1 game (common), 1 controllers, basic cables 80$
Playstation 1 (orig): same as the NES 90$
Sega Genesis: Same 80$ also
Sega Genesis: Power base converter, 1 game, 1 controller, basic cables 200$
But oddly enough I did find these
Sega CDX: no cords working 5$
Atari 7800 (mint): 2 controllers, power cables, tv rf, 15 games (2600 and 7800), and even a 20 gig hard drive lost in there... manuals... also 5$
Atari Lynx: 1 game working 5$
they also last time priced pentium 2 pc's at 200$+
slap some sense into them.

Some of you guys sound lucky (or I'm dumb) because some of these prices I read and thought, "That seems reasonable to me..."
I should probably get an eBay account, because a lot of the time (in stores) I know I'm paying a bit too much, but don't have much of a choice.
It's funny that the places where you get the worst deals are also where you get the best deals. Some people have no idea how to educate themselves on how to sell.

Am I the only one who really doesn't see a problem with the bullseye seller? I mean, hell, if people are willing to buy from him, that's their business. Personally, I refuse to buy games if they're two dollars more than I would pay for them (yeah, I know, I'm a cheapskate, but if I did that ten times I'd have twenty dollars to go buy another game or two with). I mean, it's really not to different from the guys who talked about selling their stuff for way too much to people.
