View Full Version : What should my one-thousandth game be?

My collection is currently at 981 games. I know 1k is just a drop in the bucket to some of you people, but to me it's a big deal. :p I'd like game number 1,000 to be something special.

One thing about my game purchasing is that it's rare for me to spend as much as $50 (or even $40) on a game. I can probably name every single game I've paid more than $50 for (it's less than 20), and I've never paid more than $100 for a game, ever.

So, now's the time to splurge. I figure game number 1,000 can be something expensive. Not Kizuna Encounter expensive, but triple-digit expensive. I'm also not just spending money for the hell of it; it should actually be a good game -- damn good, in fact. It also shouldn't be something that's so rare it'll take me like a year to find. It should be common enough that I can track one down within a relatively short period of time, but obviously rare enough to hold a value.

I'm also not looking to pay a premium price for something that is purely a collector's item -- like if a certain print of a game is extra rare or something. I'm excluding game & special controller combos, and it has to be for a system I own (which is most of them, but I don't own a Neo Geo).

In short, I'm looking for a game that is fun to play, kind of rare, and overpriced. I game that I would like to own, but normally wouldn't be willing to buy due to price. Panzer Dragoon Saga would be an obvious choice, but I think it might be "too obvious". Any suggestions?

Boing! on VCS, one boxed copy went for $800 on ebay recently. Excellent game btw.

Why don't you just make it personal? Find a really nice sealed copy of your favorite game.

EDIT: Something like ebay Item number: 300116027422
A sealed SMB 3 going for $225. I don't collect sealed games so it would be a big deal for me to buy a sealed SMB 1. (That's probably the game I'd go for) I have a sealed Burgertime for INTV but that was always my family's back-up copy. It's one of the only things I have left from my childhood.

If you have a saturn, and like a different rpg, try Panzer Dragoon Saga. The graphics have aged a bit, but the story and gameplay are unique imo and it's also a bit of a key title.

I've seen j_factor around the forums enough to know he'd say "Panzer Dragoon Saga would be an obvious choice, but I think it might be "too obvious."

Dammit, just buy a Neo Geo at the right time (998/999) and get a package with one or two games that will put you over 1,000.

You DID say triple digit expensive. That will do it. If the system itself proves to be a splurge, make sure the game or two that is included is one of the less expensive ones.

Not like your system will drop down in value either. You won't wake up one morning and find that the price dropped to $45-50 for the console.

Personally, I'd try to get a complete, sealed copy of Earthbound. Oversized box, the manual, the works.

I'd have to agree there. Not only are you spending the money you want to spend, but you get a cool bit of packaging that's different from everything else.

I'm so surprised that Earthbound has become so rare boxed. I'm glad I was a good little tyke and saved mine. :D

you should sell of the 100s of games you don't play so you won't get to 1000

I'd go with Snatcher for the Sega CD, if not that, I second EarthBound.

I'd go with Panorama Cotton for the Mega Drive. Definitely worth its price being a totally unique game pushing the system to its limits. $150 should give you one.

Out of what I own, I'd recommend Dracula X: Rondo of Blood for PC Engine or Valkyrie Profile for PlayStation. I didn't pay over $100 for either, but if I had to, I would drop that much for those in a second.

For stuff I don't own, if I had over a hundred to blow on a single item, I'd probably go with some fancy limited edition box set from Japan. I've already spent over $200 a piece on both Valkyrie Profile sets, and I'd love to get more, especially the Fire Emblem set for the third Super Famicom release (which all by itself is a pretty rare and expensive game, considering it was released in 2000). If I REALLY was going to splurge, I'd get a 64DD for N64 just so I could get and play the F-Zero X Expansion Kit.

I'm not going to pay for a sealed copy of anything. I want this to be something that I'll actually play. I'm also not terribly interested in the EarthBound packaging, and I don't want anything that costs more than, say, $300.

Okay, I've made out a list. (Some of these, I'm not 100% sure on their expense). So far I'm considering:

Dracula X: Chi no Rondo (pc engine)
Magical Chase (turbografx)
Bonk III CD (turbografx)
Gleylancer (mega drive)
Panorama Cotton (mega drive)
Rendering Ranger: R2 (super famicom)
Keio Flying Squadron (sega cd)
Snatcher (sega cd)
Dragon Force (saturn)
Dungeons & Dragons Collection (saturn)
Elevator Action Returns (saturn)
Radiant Silvergun (saturn) - might also be "too obvious"
Twinkle Star Sprites (saturn)
Sokyugurentai (saturn)
Street Fighter Zero 3 (saturn)
Silhouette Mirage (saturn)
Stellar Assault SS (saturn)
Ninja Jaja Marukun (saturn)
Napple Tale (dreamcast)

Powerlords for the Odyssey 2...
Tank Command for the Atari 7800...
Spiderman Web of Fire for 32x (DP member has one listed on ebay ATM)

Actually I think Bonk II CD is a good choice....

Panzer Dragoon is also a great choice even if obvious...I mean it is ONLY your thousandth game. Save some of the biggers ones for you know 5,000th and 10,000th...

Magical Chase (turbografx)
Panorama Cotton (mega drive)
Keio Flying Squadron (sega cd)
Snatcher (sega cd)
Elevator Action Returns (saturn)
Radiant Silvergun (saturn) - might also be "too obvious"
Twinkle Star Sprites (saturn)---this game is great 2 player

Dracula X or Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire for PC Engine would be nice. And if you don't own a Neo Geo, taking care of that would be a good thing to do. Opening the box to your first AES and marveling at the size of the cartridges has a special feeling to it.

Buy a $150 cart and give the other $850 to charity. Maybe go to a children's hospice ward and bring a couple of Wii's with you. I guarantee this will satisfy you more than any $1000 game that you play and then put away in a dark box or stick on a shelf.

Someone else mentioned "Alien Soldier", and I would have to agree with that. It's an awesome game, a Treasure title, pretty rare (yet accessible complete and mint at the moment...3 on ebay I think) and while it is expensive, it's $150 expensive. It will also retain it's value because of these factors (great game, a Treasure title, pretty rare, mint). I'd go for that personally.

There is a good chance you have these, and they are very common, but here are my recommendations: Kaboom! or Dragster for the 2600

Both short simple games that are just amazing in how well they hold up keep you coming back for more. Dragster, A 10 second game you can play for hours on end. Who would have though that to be possible?

However, if you don't have a Vectrex, get one of those and make the built in Minestorm your first game.
