I'm at work really bored and just posted/reading threads like mad. Anywho whats everyones favorite Contra, and why? Secondly whats everyone's favorite Contra rip off?

My vote for favorite Contra goes to Contra: Hard Corps for the Sega Genesis. This is my favorite title because I think it has the coolest bosses, excellent sound/music, and I have fond memories of my college roomates and I wasteing hours and hours playing this game. My other favorites are Contra, NES; Contra: Shattered Soldier, PS2; Contra 3, SNES.

When I asked for your favorite rip off I dont mean "rip off" in a bad way. But my favorite shooter kind of like Contra would be Gunstar Heroes probally. It's a memorible and enjoyable experience, with excellent bright colors and cool bosses. Also the weapon system is pretty rad.

Famicom Contra>Arcade Super Contra>Contra 3 Alien Wars

I say famicom contra since i find the nes one to be inferior.

Btw i like contra hardcorps as well even if it is a boss fest.

My favorite is the original on the NES, it's the one I've played the most, and I have lots of good memories with it.

As for my favorite "rip-off", I'd have to go with Gunstar Heroes as well.

NES Super C. I played that so much I eventually beat it in one life. The arcade Contra games are actually pretty crap, really.

The original Contra is my favorite hands down. Been playing that game since it came out and still love it.

Hard Corps for me as well. It has the most variety of any game in the series.

For rip-offs, I really liked the Sega CD version of The Terminator.

I have been playing both arcade Contra titles a ton in preparation for doing some super-dooper-in-depth walkthroughs for them. Contra is alright in arcades, but it's not the pinnacle of the series - it deserves a nod for getting many things right on the first try. I think that one got rushed out the door.

Super Contra threw away the perspective stages (boo) but the top-down stages are done alright (I don't know why they put a Shell attack in there instead of something useful like direction lock, though the level design wouldn't really make a direction lock that useful). On the hardest difficulty level this is an amazing old-school challenge. For the moment, this is actually my favorite Contra game.

Hard Corps used to be my favorite, I believe. It's just too goofy for its own good at times, and the characters aren't balanced at all - it's been a while since I've had this discussion, but I think that Browny and maybe Ray are the two characters worth using. Fang is mostly a joke. It's still great fun, but a bit too complex to just run through.

Contra III is better than I originally gave it credit for, although I miss jungle stages.

Super C is fun, but I'm respecting it less after having played more of Super Contra (arcade). At the moment, I don't like Contra for NES all that much.

I played the BREW version of the 2006-release Contra arcade game to cell phone port, and while I originally hated it, it quickly grew on me. I've managed to beat the game on Normal in one continue. My current highscore is 229K. Unlike the original arcade game, you can loop it at least once for higher and higher scores, which is cool.

I haven't any experience with the Saturn/PSX/PS2 Contra titles yet, although I've finally picked up both PS2 games (will have to see about emulation for now) and the PSX titles should be coming shortly.

I have big hopes for Contra 4. It'll continue some of the general artistic / thematic trends of Contra III (i.e. too much time in run-down cities) that I honestly don't care for that much (overall, I think that Super Contra's style is the most fitting for the series), but we'll see. The main focus is the gameplay, and that looks buttoned down tight :)

Contra III on the SNES, followed by the first one on the NES.

the PSX titles

Ugh, don't bother. I thought Legacy of War was a terrible disappointment... then I played The Contra Adventure and it seemed almost respectable by comparison. Both are really shit, though.

I have to; it's my "job" now ;) They won't cost much so I'm not complaining.

I like Hard Corps the best. I love it how much there´s going on on-screen, there´s non-linear gameplay, great effects...gorgeous!

Contra Hard Corps for me too. Four different characters, six endings, many weapons and bosses, great music. A terrific game.

It is not as good as Gunstar Heroes though, an all time top 10 for me.

NES Super C. I played that so much I eventually beat it in one life. The arcade Contra games are actually pretty crap, really.

Same here. I also beat that on one life and it is my favorite.

I think the actual level design in NES Super C is slightly less interesting than the first NES Contra but I prefer the top-down levels to the two behind-the-back view stages (which I never liked) from the first game.

I can't think of a favorite Contra rip off I have, since this is a style of game I don't play too often. I guess I'll nominate Blowout (GC/XBox/PS2).

Since you posted the thread, Barbarian, I'll offer you a couple more opinions.

My favorite weapon in the NES games is the Laser, Spread just makes the game too easy. Least favorite is the F (Flamethrower?) icon, which I always thought was a worse weapon than the standard rifle.

My favorite stage would have to be the Energy Zone from the first NES game.

My favorite stage theme (music) would be Level 4 from Super C, which is closely followed by the Energy Zone theme.

Of course keep in mind that I never owned or played any of the Contra games that came out after the 16-bit era.

Poll added because I can't imagine why it wasn't there in the first place :)

PS we have a 10 item maximum on polls so I left out handhelds and Contra Legacy of War which is oft-considered the worst Contra game ever (don't say "Contra Force"... I know, I know....). Carry on.

Has to be the original Contra...still my favorite.

Best rip-off is the Metal Slug titles.

NES Contra. I grew up on that. Good stuff. All those 30-men nights with my uncle and brother, we'd randomly switch team combinations, and just beat the game to death back in '88 and '89, damn good times.

Thanks Joe! Woo, another vote for Super Contra.

Oh, it's the first one. Darn...

Man, I can't believe you didn't add the Konami handheld LCD game. Also, I'd argue that Operation C deserves to be in there more than C: The Contra Adventure and Contra Farce.

Contra on NES is a magical game for me because its one of the first nes games I ever saw and played...its a great game too. Great graphics, great music, great weapons (well the laser sucks)

I have that, and got it for Amiga as well. Always wanted to find the C64 big box version...and ports of the original Contra would be nice; don't have anything for the original Contra except the Famicom release (and a couple new ports)

I actually really dug Operation C - the 1st Gameboy Contra ... it was probably closest to Super C in terms of it's level structure, but it had a great enemy pace (never got TOO overwhelming/twitchy, yet still a challenge) and the "homing" gun was one of my all time favorite Contra weapons.

But, if we're going "non-handheld" - Super Contra (arcade/XBLA) with Contra Hard Corps (Genesis) being a close second.

Contra III gets my vote, one of the best action games of all time hands down.

Contra 3 is the manliest game ever.

My favorite Contra ripoff is Metal Slug 1.

Well after a little over 24 hours it looks like the original Contra has taken a very healthy leage with over 50% of the votes. As of 9 PM central time zone, on October the 1st the results are as follows:

1st. Contra (NES) 53.33%
2nd. Contra 3 (SNES) 16.67%
3rd. Contra Hard Corps (Genesis) 13.33%
4th. Super C (NES) 10.00%
5th. Super Contra (Arcade) 6.67%

So it looks like my favorite is in third place closely behind Contra 3 for the SNES. Thanks everyone for the input. For some reason I thought I was going to be the only one that liked Contra Hard Corps for the Genesis the best. As for favorite Contra clones/rip-offs I see that a lot of people have agreed with me on Gunstar Heroes.

Actually Contra: Hard Corps for the Sega Genesis just took second place. Because I created the thread but did not put the poll on it, because after being a member for 4 years and over 800 posts later I still dotn think I know how to make a poll. So Digitpress added the poll, so I realized I had no voted, so I voted and Contra: HC came up to second. LONG LIVE HARD CORPS!!!

Hard Corps for Originality of the formula as well as an interesting remix of Simon's theme. That hidden area (ending) was hilarious.

Legacy of War, certainly on the Saturn but also on the PSX at least some of the time.

Oh yeah, I bought a sealed C: The Contra Adventure for like $21 shipped...it's expensive, but I wanted the game, I guess...next up, Legacy of War.

Also, I'm glad somebody else voted for Super Contra :P

Contra for the NES is still my favorite, despite the more robust Super Contra for the Super NES As far as "ripoffs" go, I used to like Midnight Resistance for the Genesis, but it hasn't aged particularly well.
