Care to elaborate?
Note that this is in regards to the console games. I do enjoy New Super Mario Bros. That said...

::Cracks fingers::
First burn was Super Mario Sunshine. I hated the concept of the backpack, the overall goal of cleaning stuff and the lack of different locales. It seemed as though Nintendo was trying to do an imitation of Rare's Banjo Kazooie games. Maybe chalk it up to nostalgia, but strapping on an oddball device to Mario didn't seem, well, natural. I felt more at home in the side stages where the backpack gets nabbed. After the greatness that was Mario 64 and the Banjo games, this was a let down, no matter how pretty it was.

Second burn was Super Paper Mario. I never really played the Paper Mario games as that style of RPG wasn't my shtick. SPM looked to be a variation of your standard platformer with unique elements. So I gave it a shot. I played it about half way through before the game felt like a chore. There could have been an easier way to flip to Mario when you needed to go 3D, Mario could have gained abilities he could use (butt stomp comes to mind- something he's had for a while) without having to switch to a Pixl. The space level, where the shooting stages were on par with a competent Klick n' Play homebrew shooter, was the beginning of the end for me. I had it about a week before it went in as trade bait.

Now as of my original post, I got a call from my bro-in-law. He was praising this game up and down, even stating his wife is playing it and liking it (a rarity). Then I got an email from Gamestop stating I'd get 20% extra for my trades towards the purchase. THEN I got a call from an old co-worker who needed their PC fixed (easy 1 hour job) which I was paid just enough to buy the last copy of Galaxy at the local GS.

The damn Mushroom Daddy struck again. The package, which is sitting behind a glass door next to the Wii in plain view taunts me as I play through Bioshock.

I can't really add much to the praise other than to state the obvious. SMG is a masterpiece. It's a shame we only get one of these every generation.

I Hope to pick it up tonight. my wii has been sittign way in the back of my closet and my 360 is broken for the second time, though I did send it back to m$ yesterday after much procrastination. I haven't played a console game in while. ...Galaxy arrives at jsut the right time. now I haven't been following Galaxyx's development but I ahve seen the return of retro enemies from the 80's, a true mushroom kingdom etc. and the use of the Glaxy in the title. when I first read about the "Galaxy" name, I thoguht just maybe this is the true long awaited sequel to sm64 . is this this it? is this the game we have been wating for since late 1996? but where was miyamoto? the question remains... can a mario gaem be a ture mario gaem without the presence of miyamoto? this isn't the sm64/zelda oot big budget era of the lae 90's anymore.

I guess I will soon find out. throgh I really was hoping for mario and luigi 2player acttion of the old days.

The game is absolutely fantastic. As fun for me as 64 was back in the day, easily.

The game really is great. Also, it screws with my mind (in a good way) more than any game I think I have ever played. And I just finished Portal.

Like Mario 64, you collect stars. And it's 3D. Other than that, Mario 64 was mostly about exploration, with some platforming thrown in. Galaxy is much more linear and platforming oriented. Each star takes you on a different path, so in effect each is it's own level with only a few common elements between them, usually. The fact that it's broken into "planets" means that each can be its own little gameplay "nugget" with no real need for cohesion between them.

well I have minor complaint about the game,
I bought it yesterday and finished it today(granted, only 62 stars), but it took me maybe 10-12 hours to blaze through the main story,
I've been waiting for this game basically since Super Mario Sunshine, which is about 5 years - finishing it within a day is kind of disappointing but then again what 10 hours that been!
I intend to collect all 120 stars which shouldn't take more than another 10 hours(I hope it will).
hands down the best platformer of this generation, gameplay, design, soundtrack, graphics, ideas behind it are top notch.
truly fantastic experience.

I too can’t stand Mario 64. I never liked the element of simply fighting the terrain in any game I’ve ever played. For me, 64 was a constant struggle simply not to fall off the level, which I would do over and over again resulting in my getting kicked out of the world over and over again. Couple that with a shit camera that you're constantly fighting and the sparse terrain/lack of enemies and it completely killed it for me.

Not being one to shy away from a Mario title and being a pure optimistic I gave Sunshine a try. Again, I was not a fan but for entirely different reasons than 64. The game was amazing looking but the backpack element simply killed it for me. I found the game to be uninteresting a few hours into it and like 64, I sat it down and never played it again.

Once again I believe that genius is not instant or constant…in other words, you can’t make an omelet without breaking a few eggs. I will definitely give Galaxy a try as it seems to be something more than 64 and does not contain a annoying element like the water gun backpack.

I won't be running out to get it anytime soon as I have plenty of games to finish at the time but I will rent it once it cools down and decide then if I want to buy it...

I suggest you do the same...

That's weird. The very first time I played Super Mario 64, I had no problem adapting to the analog control and making Mario move where I wanted him to. I rarely fell off the side of a level.

The camera seemed really good, too. When I wanted a different angle, I didn't mind shifting it with the yellow C buttons. It integrated well with the rest of the game.

Actually... okay I'm gonna blank this cos it's a little spoiler...

Actually there are 242 stars to collect... if you want to true 100% heh

So could take you a while yet... thoroughly looking forward to picking this up next week. Already tried it for an hour or two so far, loved it.

At what point in time did gamers start equating a game's length with it's quality? Is an 80 hour game automatically better than a 10 hour game? What about a 20 minute game like chess, which has infinite replay value?

Also, at what point in time did gamers start considering a 20 hour game short? To a teenager, that might seem like nothing, but to an adult with a full-time job and other responsibilities and commitments, a 20 hour game is actually pretty long and could take several weeks to beat.

I've been waiting for this game basically since Super Mario Sunshine, which is about 5 years - finishing it within a day is kind of disappointing

What's your point? People waited a long time for the Star Wars prequels and the Matrix sequels and those were only 2 hours long! Nobody seemed disappointed. Oh, wait... :)

Merlins Beard

I do agree in principle with you Rob; however, those movies didn't cost sixty bucks to see! I do think the game is long enough though.

don't get me wrong, I loved every bit of it, and I'm giving this game 10/10, game of the year award but the fact I finished main quest in about two five hour sittings kind of hurts, although like I said I hope 120 or more ^_~ stars will last for much longer.
in a way all games have infinite replayability, you can play them as long as you want ^_~
when it comes to Mario Games I do expect challenge and not to say there wasn't any but I was expecting it to be more daring( for comparison SMB on DS was super short and very easy).
but like I said minor complaint about the difficulty(or rather observation point).
it's all about who you are and how much time you're spending playing games on a regular basis so longevity will vary naturally.
that doesn't change the fact that this is the game of the year and one of my favorites of all time.
ps.and your point regarding movies was inadequate, because when it comes to movies, you know they won't be longer than 3 hours ^_~,
games can last for dozens of hours.

when it comes to Mario Games I do expect challenge and not to say there wasn't any but I was expecting it to be more daring

I have a feeling Super Mario Galaxy is similar to Super Mario 64 in that the minimum amount of stars required to beat the game were fairly easy to get. That portion of the game was geared toward the mainstream audience. However, the remaining stars were much more challenging and that portion of the game was geared toward the hard core audience.

That way, there's a good mix of fun and challenge. Mainstream gamers won't get frustrated and will be able to beat the game...and hard core gamers will get a good challenge at the end and will get satisfaction from completing the game 100%.

I saw The English Patient in a movie theater and it felt like it dragged on for about eight hours. :)

Last night I gave it a half hour or so shot at the bro & sis-in law's. The sis played it first then passed it off to me. So far, DEFINITELY better than Sunshine. However I will say that the game feels more like an evolution than a revolution. Not that it's NOT fun, it is, but there are elements I came across that feel like other games I've played. I had no problem with the gravity (walking on sides of planets or other land masses) as I went through a similar experience in Psychonauts.

It does maintain a level of Mario 64 "openness" where you want to shoot some odd thing on the ground to see what happens or explore a certain area to attempt to get an item you saw at the corner of your eye when going through the level.

Definitely going to crack my copy open....after I'm done with Bioshock which should be soon.

I got it preordered, and picked it up on the 13th. I only have 13 stars so far (I work a lot, plus hang out with the girl, so not much time), but so far the game is awesome, and makes me proud to be a 35 year old uber Nintendo fanboy. I couldn't ask for a more perfect game. Nintendo has 30 years experience making games, and boy does it ever show here.

This game is really fun. It's got some really cool throwbacks too, like it'll show stages from SMB1 as backgrounds, and a lot of old favorites remixed. Every little galaxy is different, every stage seems fresh.

Having tried not to read previews and spoilers, I was actually surprised that the one thing I heard over and over again was just not true -- SMG is nothing like SM64. In fact, it was so unlike what I was expecting that I wasn't sure what to think at first.

SMG is constantly screwing up your bearings, disorienting you as you move from platform to platform. It's paced more like a 2D platformer than a 3D platformer, and many of the levels are linear and not about exploration. To top it off, you need to use the pointer to collect pieces as well as aiming and shooting or grabbing and pulling. This adds to the sensory overload.

All in all, the game is downright awesome. It's missing that sense of awe SM64 inspired (it felt futuristic at the time), but it's much more engaging than Sunshine.

And it looks great via component cables on HD. I still can't believe they pulled off the fur effects on the queen bee.

Why not? Star Fox Adventures was released in 2002 for the GameCube and the characters had fur.

I wish to chime in and say that I really enjoy Mario Galaxy! I am having much fun with this game!

OF note:

I hate(d) Mario 64. I play it at Toys R Us in 1996 and that moment along with playing Goldeneye at a friends home turn me away from Nintendo 64 for 8 years. I could not grasp analog control and 3D games at those times :embarrassed:

The Wii is open me up to 3D gaming - first Zelda Twilight Princess and now Mario Galaxy.

I like Mario bacause it offer some challenge but is not extrema frustration. It is classic gaming bliss for me all over again but now in 3D. Like I say I am very late to 3D gaming and am finally enjoy it now 10 years later :embarrassed:

Alright, not liking Mario 64 (a criticly acclaimed game) can be a fluke. Things happen, you don't have to like every game hugely popular game. But not liking Goldeneye, the greatest multiplayer game in the history of videogames, is borderline blasphemy. :)

I bought Super Mario Galaxy last evening but haven't played it yet. Not only is it my first Wii game but I don't even have a Wii console yet. I had decided I wouldn't buy one (if ever) until a new Mario adventure came along at least. Now it's getting impossible to find the machine but I just ordered one today through Half.com so I'll have one soon unless I get cheated which I'm confident won't happen.

I'm gonna hafta say, my fears about this game have been all but put to rest.

This game is quite fun. The emphasis of the game is back to balls to the wall platforming and exploring. And the controls are airtight (which is one of the reasons why I hated Mario 64).

The Wii's finally got it's killer app.

Just wanted to update for anyone sitting on the fence (and to tempt anyone who has the game under the tree and not in their Wii):

After you open up your fourth observatory, the game just becomes AMAZING. I mean, the first 20-30 stars are fun, but after the fourth observatory, the levels become long, complex, and require both problem solving skills and good to great reflexes. I loved Mario 64, but SMG is a whole 'nutha level -- this is easily the greatest 3D platformer ever made, if for no other reason it feels more like a 2D platformer with 3D elements rather than the usual exploration and collect-a-thon that almost all 3D platformers are nowadays. The level design is absolute genius -- I am constantly muttering, "that is *bleeping* amazing" all the time when I play because the cleverness just gushes off of the screen. The ingenuity is endless, and there are some levels that have 3 or 4 moments where your admiration almost distracts you from the task at hand.

SMG is not meant to simply be beaten. You owe it to yourself to at least try every level, because it's a terrible waste to get just enough stars to beat the game and then leave all that genius untapped, especially when the better levels open up after you have the minimum amount needed to reach the ending. Don't worry that this game is too short. It will only be short if you cheat yourself out of the privilege of trying every single level.

SMG is one of those games where the hype is totally justified. And it should be believed.

Here's something cool that happened while I was playing, but it is a spoiler:

In the Bonefin level, you had to hit the big bony fish three times on the "X" under his jaw. After dying a dozen times, I finally hit him for a third time, and I got the star... except, the thing was, I was in the red for air, and i ran out before I could get the star or a bubble. So I had to do it all over again. One of the strategies I was using was to use the green shells to maneuver around and then toss them to get a red shell since they were homing a easier to use against a moving target. I hit the Bonefin twice and grabbed a green shell to make my way to a red shell. As I approached the red shell, I flicked the remote to toss the green shell and grabbed the red one. All of a sudden, there is an explosion sound and the cut scene of Bonefin exploding. The star appears. I takes me a second to figure out what happened -- when I tossed the green shell for the red one, it hit Bonefin under the jaw just by chance. A one in a milllion shot. Okay, maybe not a million, but it was verrry lucky.

I dislike Mario 64. I HATE Sunshine.

This game is brilliant. Abso-freaking-lutely brilliant. The level design is nothing short of amazing. In the 25-odd stars I've gotten so far I've never once felt like it has been repetitive. The vast variety of mechanics just astounds me.

The camera is passable. Only occasionally do I struggle with it (and that's usually in the "flat" galaxies, like the start of the first world, for example). For a 3D platformer to only give me occasional grief is a rarity.

The game sold 500,000 units in its first week.

It may not be Halo 3 numbers, but it is apparently the best first week for any Mario game in the US.

Aside from the mega-hype, Halo 3 benefitted from two factors:

1) Most of the 360 owners were salivating for Halo 3. I know a lot of people who bought the 360 in expectation of Halo 3. The jury is still out on what the typical Wii owner wants.

2) There is still a 37% difference in user base between the 360 and the Wii. The Wii may be selling phenomenally now, but the 360 still had a year lead.

After playing Super Mario Galaxy for a few hours, I have a hard time adjusting to looking at a computer screen with its top-down, left-right arrangement of text. It really messes with my brain to continually move Mario from all manner of strange perspectives. One second you hop on a goomba in the traditional way, the next second you're looking down on Mario's head and having to control him differently to stomp the goomba.

I like the U.S. version of Super Mario Bros. 2 more than I like Super Mario Bros. 3.

SMB2 (USA) was fun and had great pacing. I prefer its cartoony, stylized graphics, too. SMB3 was very good, but got exhausting near the end. It was way too long to beat in one sitting without warping. A save feature would've been perfect.

I also like Super Mario World more than Super Mario Bros. 3.

^^ I passed that one fairly quickly. It's the damn monkey-ball-rolling level on the..."green star" galaxy I think it is...that gives me so many problems. I just can't get the hang of it.

I love that ball level. It's one of the ones that I go back and play for fun.

For fun? Ahh, you people suck. That level sucks. Everything involving people beating that level and the level itself sucks.

Did anyone have problems with the manta-ray racing level?

don't have a lead foot and you'll be fine, the coach is pretty generous, you don't have to beat the best time, just the time he gives you (I think it's 3 minutes).

Yeah, that level took the longest for me. The controls were just too clunky to get used to I guess. I'm never, ever, going back to that planet.

And the thing is, the bubble-blowing levles are just so easy! Or at least for me. The manta-ray level took me a couple of tries, but I can't beat the level-that-shall-not-be-named for the life of me.

I loved that level :) Got it my second try.

I'm having a bitch of a time on the Major Burrows fast foe comet.

Any suggestions?

I can get him twice, but he always kills me on the 3rd attempt. And having 1 life bar doesn't help much...

If I remember correctly it took me a number of tries to get him, also always dying before the final hit. I don't think there was any trick though. I just managed to get him eventually.

Anyone else love the comet stages? I think they are the best part of the levels.

I finally beat the Luigi's Purple Coins stage last night. Man, that was rough, though I've seen videos on the intertubes of people just blazing through getting every single coin. Wow.

The Green Star Galaxies I didn't have too much trouble with. The Bubble Blast took me quite a few tries, but I really enjoyed it. The surfing level wasn't too bad... I found that just tapping the A button kept me going at a relatively slow pace.... youruglyclone is right, you have three whole minutes, so just take your time. I also think the fact that you have to twist the remote instead of moving it side to side has a lot of people confused. Rolling Gizmo... I passed that by pure luck.

I didn't have that much of a problem with Major Burrows; it only took me a few trys. Just remember that on the third attempt, he won't pop up completely the first time you pound the ground, but he will the second time. Just keep running from him and you should do fine.

Major Burrow's gets easier every time i go after him. It's all a matter of knowing when to pound.

Same with Bouldergeist. He was intimidating the first time I had to beat him, now I can do it with my eyes tied behind my back.

I just finally got this game and.....words fail me.

It is so choice. It might even be better than SM64, but I'll reserve that judgement until after I've finished it.

I've only got like 25 stars, but the first real Boswer battle is amazing. It just feels epic, way more so than anything in Sunshine did.

I wish I was at home playing it right now :(

I think I'm at about 25 stars now. With the holidays I really haven't had a chance to sit and play it and when I do I have to muster up the ambition to do so. Not that I don't think it's fun-once I start playing I have a good time but it doesn't have that "gotta play it" draw for me.

I think maybe I'm just burned out on Nintendo's games. With Twilight Princess I pretty much played through it without hardly dying (my few deaths happened the first time I was playing a wolf) or getting stuck with a puzzle. It was fun but when you break it down I've done a lot of the actions before. Or what's more probable is that my taste of games have changed. I sorta have to "force" myself to play Galaxy, not in a "sigh, I should really play this" but more of a balance of what I want to do more. I didn't get that with Bioshock-when I had a free moment of game time, boom I was there.

On the flip side, I am loving the character this game has. It's the little things: backgrounds, NPC reactions, the music.

Gaaah! I went to one of the hungry luma levels, lost all my lives, and now I can't seem to access it. Will I ever get to go back to that (or any of the luma levels) again?

EDIT: Never mind, I got it!
